A van to feed vulnerable people

Do you want to join us in making a difference?

We’re raising money in aid of SAVE THE WORLD CLUB to purchase a van for delivering to those in need in the New Malden, Kingston, Surbiton, Chessington and wider surrounding areas. Our aim is to buy, tax, add signage, ply line and insure this van which will make an enormous difference to those in poverty and need in this large area, by having the capacity to collect even more surplus stock from ALDI supermarket on a daily basis for daily distribution to the vulnerable members of the community.

At the beginning of the UK lockdown I was asked by Tariq Shabbeer if I would volunteer to help load and deliver food donated by ALDI on a daily basis and deliver it to needy people in the area. I agreed and have been helping Des Kay do this every night since.

Des Kay founded SAVE THE WORLD CLUB in 1986, and it was registered as a charity (no. 1096271) in 2002.  He always used his own 35 year-old van, but recently, after 15 years of charitable service, it died, leaving the SAVE THE WORLD CLUB without a good large vehicle to collect and distribute food to the vulnerable people we serve.  The new van will be owned solely by SAVE THE WORLD CLUB.  We have been collecting surplus food from supermarkets for 12 years and the new van will enable us to maintain partnerships with all the big supermarket chains, including Aldi, Lidl, M & S, Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose.

Fritz Walleczek, Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility at ALDI UK said “We’re always looking for new and creative ways to put leftover food from our stores to good use. Our partnership with SAVE THE WORLD CLUB is enabling us to distribute even more surplus stock to those who need it.”

Since 2019 SAVE THE WORLD CLUB has provided more than 30,000 meals to those most in need in the area. It tackles both food waste and poverty. This charity operates on a volunteer basis – no salaries are paid and each individual volunteer covers his/her own expenses. At present the volunteers are using their own vehicles, which limits both the collection and the distribution and we badly need a LARGE VAN to facilitate a larger central collection and distribution which of course will mean more help for those families. Everyone benefits, ALDI, SAVE THE WORLD CLUB, and people in need.

Please help us by donating. Donations are eligible for Gift Aid, but best of all you, the donor, will know that you will help augment and even participate in the joy, love and respect given to the volunteers by the grateful receivers of the much-needed distributions.
