Helping a UofC Football Dino and 2x Olympian Get Back to Work

My name is Guy Scheffer, and asking for help is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.

As a former high-performance athlete, I’ve always been the one people could count on - the one pushing forward, not the one reaching out. But one thing sport taught me is this: no one succeeds alone. Every finish line I ever crossed was because of the team around me.

Today, I’m facing a different kind of challenge - and I need that team again.

Many of you may remember me from my time with the University of Calgary Dinos football program, and from representing Canada as part of the Olympic bobsleigh team in the early 1990s. Those experiences shaped who I am. They taught me discipline, resilience, and how to show up and do the work.

I’ve carried that mindset into my life and my trade ever since.

For a long time, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a landlord who went above and beyond to support me and keep a roof over my head. I’m truly grateful for that kindness, but that chapter has come to an end, and I now find myself at a critical crossroads.

I’m a professional painter, experienced in residential and commercial projects. I take pride in doing the job right, and I’m ready to get back to steady, reliable work.

• Stable Housing – Securing a safe place to live while rebuilding consistency and income

• Essential Living Costs – Addressing immediate financial obligations and stabilizing my situation

• Work Readiness – Ensuring I have what I need to take on jobs and generate income

• Tools & Equipment – Purchasing the painting equipment and supplies needed to take on jobs

Where I’m At

Right now, I’m at a point where stability isn’t guaranteed - but I’m not giving up.

I’ve faced challenges before, both in sport and in life. I know how to stay disciplined, work hard, and push forward. What I need now is the chance to get back to a starting line I can build from again.
