A SAFE HOME for THE TURNER FAMILY
We first met Zelene Turner in 2009, through our membership in The 20/20 Sisters of Vision, a Giving Circle in Durham, North Carolina. That spring The Raleigh News and Observer ran a story about Zelene’s daughter, Jayla who received a transplant at Duke Hospital, after having been born without a thymus gland. Our Giving Circle connected with the Turner family and assisted them in various ways over the years.
Mrs. Turner is a mother of three wonderful girls, ranging in age from 13 to 23. Her life changed quite unexpectedly, with Jayla’s the birth. Jayla’s medical needs required attention at a hospital facility that was four hours from the family’s rural home, in Hertford, NC. Mrs. Turner had to give up her job, to help facilitate her daughter’s medical needs, and her husband became the sole provider for the family. Almost five years ago, a painful tragedy hit this family, when Mr Turner died very suddenly, the day after Thanksgiving. This left the family with the loss of significant emotional and financial support.
Fortunately the family was able to gain some relief from the financial burden of a crumbling trailer home and rent, when they moved into the house left to Mrs.Turner and her brother by their late father. After Mr. Turner’s untimely death, his work colleagues donated hours of labor, supplies and financial contributions to make the house livable. Despite their generous efforts, the house remains in need of major repairs, some of which are required before the home can be insured. The family faces the risk of losing everything, should their house experience some unexpected damage.
We are pleased to join the Turner family in looking for the resources needed to make their home safe. Those repairs include the purchase and installation of 6 windows, the repair of floors and the replacement of copper plumbing, painting and drywalling, the installation of gutters and railings, sanding the crawl space and grading.
