For 15+ years (I don’t know the actual number but it is at least that) Johnny has lived outside—through heat, cold, and everything in between. Next month, he turns 72.
He isn’t alone. His family is with him every day: two loyal dogs, Chase and Evie (aka Mamas) who depend on him just as much as he depends on them.
Johnny has never been the kind of person to ask for money. In all the years I’ve known him (close to 15), he has never once asked me for money or held out a hand trying to gain sympathy. When I ask what he needs, his answers are always simple: socks, wipes, maybe something to make a sandwich. That’s it.
He’s disabled, he walks hunched over and is very difficult to understand. Sometimes he writes in the dirt to answer me. I’m not sure if it’s a speech impediment or something medical, but it is a significant struggle for him to speak or respond quickly. He’s aging. And he’s spent decades surviving on the streets with quiet dignity.
But now, for the first time, Johnny is open to accepting real help—because it means he can stay with Chase and Evie. I asked him what help would HE accept. I didn’t tell him what I thought he should do.
Most local shelters/temp housing don’t allow two dogs. Johnny’s dogs are his family, and any solution has to keep them together.
So we’re trying something different.
My goal is to raise $20,000 to purchase a small travel trailer—a safe, stable place Johnny can finally call home. A place where he and his dogs can sleep without fear, stay warm (and cool in the Bakersfield Summer), and begin to live instead of just survive.
This isn’t about giving Johnny a handout. It’s about giving him a chance.
How the funds will be used:
- $10,000–$14,000: Used travel trailer (safe, livable condition)
- $2,000–$5,000: RV space + utilities (first few months in a local park)
- $1,500–$3,000: Setup, supplies, and essentials (including for his dogs)
- $1,500–$2,000: Transport, fees, and emergency cushion
Every dollar will go directly toward giving Johnny and his dogs a safe, stable place to live.
If just 400 people gave $50, we could fully fund a home for Johnny and his dogs. Even $5 helps—it all adds up.
Johnny has spent 15+ years surviving outside.
Now, we have a chance to change that—together.
Again, he has never asked me for money. Not once.
But today, I’m asking for him.
Let’s give Johnny something he hasn’t had in decades—a safe place to sleep, a door to close, and a home where Chase and Evie are right there beside him.
If enough of us give a little, we can give him everything.
Please donate if you can.
And if you can’t, sharing this could be what brings the right people to help.
I have posted about him on my personal socials…. I have never tried to take pictures of him in an effort to not make him feel exploited. I have posted pictures of the dogs, specifically Evie when she needed medical care and I was able to help.
Today, Johnny let me take a couple pics of him after I asked. He knows what I’m trying to do and he is unbelievably grateful. I want nothing more than to help him live with his chosen family in a safe place.
I know many will ask some common questions. Did you try Flood? Why won’t he give up the dogs? Is he a druggie? I do have the answers to those but I want this page to be a positive pathway to help Johnny and the pups. Feel free to message me privately on my socials or email if you have additional questions.
Thank you for being part of this… in any way you are able.
