The Heartbreak of an Abrupt Closure
When WellStrong, a local wellness center for the recovery community, recently shuttered its doors with little warning, it left a massive hole in the Cape. For many, this wasn't just a place to exercise—it was a lighthouse. Within days of the closure, the fallout became real. My dear friend Karen, a dedicated recovery coach who was let go in the closure, has already seen people on her caseload return to drinking. When a safety net vanishes overnight, the stakes are truly life and death.
The Power of Lived Experience
Karen isn't just a coach; she is a person in recovery herself. She understands the stakes because she has lived them. Her classes aren't just about movement; they are about survival, connection, and the strength found in shared experience. She is a peer leader who refuses to let her community be abandoned, even after losing her own position.
Starting from Scratch
I went to WellStrong’s liquidation sale this past weekend hoping to secure the equipment Karen needs to keep her classes running. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding with another buyer who purchased the items for business purposes, the equipment we hoped for is no longer available to us. This means we are starting from scratch. I have personally supported this community for three years, and this year I have committed to a donation that is a significant increase over my contribution from last year. I am stretching my own resources as far as they can go to anchor this project—but I need your help to cross the finish line.
How Your Donation Helps
We are raising funds to provide Karen and her students with:
Professional-Grade Equipment: We need to purchase new yoga mats, bolsters, and blankets so the community has the tools they need to heal.
A Summer Bridge Fund: While we have a wonderful potential partner in the Falmouth Rec Center for much of the year, we need funds to secure rental spaces during the summer season when the center is used for camps.
Additional Support: Your donations may also help us hire guest instructors to enrich the program, or provide apparel for those who don’t have any, ensuring everyone can participate fully.
Stability is the foundation of recovery. By donating, you aren't just buying a mat—you are helping a person in recovery lead their community back to the light. Thank you for standing with us.
