Our mission
The Black Lives Matter movement was founded 6 years ago on July 13, 2013. Their mission statement declares they strive to “creat[e] a world free of anti-Blackness, where every Black person has the social, economic, and political power to thrive”. The fight against racism, whether individual or systematic, cannot be fought by black lives alone. People of all races must band together and ally themselves with the black community to amplify their voices. This is the only way to put an end to all forms of racial discrimination against the black community and all people of color.
Now that the posts have been shared and the videos of the horrific brutality exposed, we find ourselves questioning, what can we do next? The answer is education. Racism is not innate; it must be taught. Every person no matter their background has the potential to be anti-racist. Whether it is slight microaggressions or outright hate speech, education bonded with empathy can cure all. In efforts to promote those pushing for active anti-racist curriculum, we have decided to fundraise in support of a foundation known as Hinesight.
About Hinesight
Hinesight is a not-for-profit organization concentrating on “addressing generational poverty in [their] community through family empowerment”. This organization focuses their attention and support towards the local public-school system. Through this they made great strides towards enhancing the education and the financial literacy resources in these marginalized and underfunded communities. Beyond the classroom, they offer adult empowerment programs focusing on the growth not only on the individual, but also on the individual’s community.
Education is a common theme. The best way to enhance yourself and your community is through knowledge! Now the only question is what can YOU do to help? Besides continuing to educate yourselves and those around you, we ask for your support. You have done your part and we ask you to help us do ours. The 6 of us want to move and get active with our brothers and sisters by our side. On Saturday August 15th, 2020 we are going to start “A Push for Justice.”
What we are doing
We will be raising funds leading up to August 15th and will push athletic sleds 1 yard for every $1 we raise. There will be 3-5 sleds placed on a turf field with a team of volunteers assigned to a sled. We will be accepting volunteers to help push, and they will be required to fill out a health questionnaire prior to the event. This team will take turns pushing the sled until they have reached their distance goal. The team can decide how they want to divvy up the distance that best suits them. This could mean that they push for a certain yardage or they swap teammates when one gets tired. At the end of the event we will have pushed the sleds to our overall distance goal will equate to the amount of money we raised.
