Hi, my name is Jason. I am putting together a fundraiser for my girlfriend and partner, Jessica, and her son Joe. Joey is 12 years old and suffers from a rare, neuromuscular disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The disease, which causes the muscles to be unable to produce dystrophin, a key protein that helps repair and grow muscles. When the body does not produce dystrophin, the muscles become atrophied and begin to deteriorate.
Joey was diagnosed with the disease when he was about five years old. Since the age of seven, he has been unable to walk and is wheelchair bound. But you would never know that he is any different than any other kid. Joe loves video games, superheroes, and cutting up with his friends and family. I couldn't love him any more if he was my own son. His quick wit and dry sense of humor lights up a room and will bring a smile to your face.
Sadly, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a degenerative disease and will continue to leave Joey more dependent on a professional caregiver as he gets older. The disease is eventually fatal. Most boys who are diagnosed with DMD will only live to their late teens or early 20's.
Because Joey is non-ambulatory, he requires a handicap accessible vehicle to get to school, to doctor's appointments, and to allow him to do the little things like going to a movie with me and Jess. Their current vehicle is almost twelve years old and is getting close to the 200,000-mile mark on the odometer. Because of the age of the vehicle, Jess is looking to replace the current one with a newer, lower-mileage handicap accessible van. A new handicap van is easily over $80,000 USD. Even a good, used van can cost close to $40,000 USD. She is only looking to find a good, low-mileage used van. The current plan is to replace the current vehicle by December, 2020 or early January of 2021.
For a single mom, a handicap-accessible van is a huge cost. And while Jess has a good job and works very hard to provide for Joey, it is still hard. I am extraordinarily proud of her. She is currently seeking a master's degree in library sciences while continuing to work a full-time professional job.
That's why I'm asking for your help. While she and her immediate family have saved some money for a down payment (I am helping with that, too), this is still going to be a huge cost. I understand that this is a difficult time for many people, thanks to the economic downturn during the time of covid-19. But if you have the ability to donate a few dollars toward the cost of a handicap van, I would be truly grateful and thankful. And I know Jess and Joey would be, too.
Jess and Joe are the loves of my life. I adore them both and it would be an amazing thing if we can help offset the cost of this large purchase.
Thank you so much for reading this. If you are able to help, anything would be greatly appreciate. If you are unable to provide any financial help, I would ask that you keep Joey and Jess in your prayers and keep a good thought for them. Despite the difficulty that is their life, they do not complain and always "keep on the sunny side of life."
With Peace, Blessings, and Love,
Jason M.
