I know this crisis personally. Not from a statistic, but from a hospital room where a doctor moved a sonogram wand across my belly and found only one heartbeat. I was pregnant with twins during the height of Covid. I had private insurance. I had a husband. I did everything right. And I still lost my son Apollo because the system didn’t make time to see me sooner. But I made it home. Too many mothers don’t.
This is for the mamas that didn’t make it. The ones who walked into a hospital full of hope and never walked back out. Who had names, and dreams, and people waiting for them. Who deserved so much more than what they were given in their final moments. This is for them. This is for the babies that don’t come home. The ones who never got to be rocked to sleep or hear their mother’s voice outside the womb. The ones mourned in silence because our culture doesn’t always make room for that kind of grief. The ones who deserved a fighting chance that the system never gave them.
And this is for the women still in it right now. Still fighting to be heard. Still leaving appointments feeling dismissed and unseen during the most sacred and vulnerable moments of their lives. Black women in New York City are 8 to 12 times more likely to die in childbirth than white women. Most of those deaths are preventable. That truth is not abstract to me. I lived inside it. I lost inside it. And I refused to stay silent after it.
That’s why I created A Moment For Mama. Because awareness without action changes nothing. We gather, we educate, we build community, and we show up for Black mothers the way the system has refused to. Every event, every conversation, every dollar raised is an act of resistance and of love.
All proceeds go directly to doula support and community events for the mamas who need it most. The more we raise, the more women we can wrap our arms around before, during, and after birth. Every mama out there deserves the chance to bring her baby home.
