My name is Verla, and I am a mother of 7 boys. Right now, I am desperately trying to get my 5 youngest children home to British Columbia after years of medical trauma and survival mode here in Ontario.

In early 2023, my son Harlan suddenly became critically ill. At only 4 years old, he went from healthy to fighting for his life within hours. He was rushed from McMaster Children’s Hospital to SickKids in Toronto in acute liver failure, slipping into a coma-like state as doctors warned me he might not survive the transfer.

After emergency testing, Harlan was diagnosed with HHH Syndrome — an extremely rare and life-threatening metabolic disorder that causes toxic ammonia to build up in the body, leading to brain damage, coma, or death without urgent treatment.

That moment changed our lives forever.

Since then, Harlan has required constant complex medical care, specialized medications, strict dietary management, emergency protocols, frequent hospitalizations, a G-tube for feeding, and ongoing care through children’s hospitals. Much of this journey has been faced alone, without family support nearby.

After repeated medical crises and years of caregiver exhaustion, we have made the heartbreaking but necessary decision to move back home to British Columbia — where our family support system is, where my older sons are, and where Harlan can continue care through BC Children’s Hospital.

We are leaving behind almost everything we own and starting over with only essentials.

We are urgently trying to raise funds to help cover: • Transportation across Canada for our family • Temporary housing upon arrival • Moving/storage costs • Medical travel and emergency needs • Basic necessities while we rebuild our lives near family support

This move is about survival, stability, and finally having help after years of doing this alone.
