A Marathon Tribute to James

On March 16th, I will be running the Barcelona Marathon with Aghamore number 5 on my back in honour of a truly remarkable young man, James McNeive.

We lost James far too soon, and his absence has left a profound impact on all those who knew him, not just in his community but across the borders in Luxembourg, which has inspired me to create this fundraiser.

James was not only an exceptional sportsman and teacher, but he also had a remarkable ability to uplift those around him, always bringing joy and warmth to every interaction. His career choice says it all about his personality, caring for others and making a difference to young people’s lives.

My memories of James go all the way back to secondary school, where he was a few years ahead of me. I knew him as Matthew and Michael's older brother, who was always bouncing around the corridors full of joy and laughter. Yet, he would always stop to say hello, ask how everything was going and double check that im staying out of trouble, (those who knew me in school will understand why). Those small moments of genuine connection showed the kind of person he was, someone who made everyone feel valued and seen.

James was deeply committed to his community, dedicating countless hours his local GAA club, Aghamore. He not only excelled as a player but also inspired younger members with his passion for the sport and support for his teammates. His contributions went beyond the field; he was a mentor and a friend to many, always encouraging others to strive for their best.

As I take on this marathon, I am committed to raising funds for the James McNeive Foundation, which supports charities that were close to his heart. This foundation not only honours his legacy but also ensures that his spirit of giving continues to make a difference in the lives of others

James, this one's for you, my friend. Thank you for the memories, the laughter, and for always keeping us on the right side of trouble. May every mile I run be a tribute to the light you brought into our lives and the lasting legacy you left behind.
