A Home for Donations: Support Sewing for Charity Australia

Donation protected
Sewing for Charity Australia is a volunteer-driven community organisation dedicated to turning donated fabric and sewing supplies into practical, handmade items for people in need. From hygiene bags and clothing to blankets and school resources, everything we create is powered by generous donations and the time and skills of everyday volunteers who simply want to help their community.

Since our beginning, we have made and donated over 500,000 handmade items, supported more than 550 organisations, and diverted over 300,000 kilograms of textile waste from landfill — proving the enormous impact that community generosity and creativity can achieve together.

In 2025 alone, our Christmas Project delivered over 10,000 items to people in need, and remarkably, this entire effort was organised from one person’s home. Imagine what we could achieve with a dedicated space.

Over time, the volume of donated materials has grown far beyond what our current scattered storage spaces can reasonably manage. Donations are now stored across multiple small locations, which makes sorting, organising, and distributing items much slower and more difficult than it needs to be. We are incredibly grateful for every donation we receive — but without a central space, we risk turning away items we could otherwise put to good use.

We are raising funds to rent a small warehouse so we can centralise and streamline all donations in one safe, organised location. A dedicated space would allow us to properly sort fabrics, store materials safely, host volunteer working bees, and prepare charity projects far more efficiently. It would also mean we can accept more donations, respond faster to community needs, and ultimately support more people doing it tough.

Every dollar raised will go directly toward warehouse rent for the first couple of months — after which we will be self-sustaining through our social enterprise, The Sewing Lair — along with basic setup costs such as shelving and storage solutions. This isn’t about growth for the sake of growth; it’s about sustainability, organisation, and making sure every donated item has the best possible chance of becoming something meaningful for someone who needs it.

With a central home for our donations, we can spend less time managing logistics and more time doing what we exist to do: sewing, creating, and giving back to our community.
