A helping "hand" for Mark deHoog

Donation protected
As most people know, Mark had a serious accident involving his right (and dominant) hand on November 14th, 2023. This involved both broken bones and severe lacerations to his fingers. After presenting to the ER he was met with amazing care, and help to get a game plan put in place.

After several phone calls by the multitasking ER doc an available plastic surgeon in the province was located. The doctor was able to find a willing and available surgeon in Terrace who would squeeze him into an already loaded schedule.

In pre op planning over the phone the surgeon told Mark that he was concerned about viability of his fingers that were damaged and the healing recovery process needed one of two things:
1. for broken bone to heal it needs flesh and blood flow to heal
2. For flesh to heal it needs structure (bone) to heal appropriately
The dr said it appears Mark doesn’t have much of either and although this is a rescue operation there were no guarantees. He could not give him an accurate assessment until they saw the hand and looked at the damage ON the OR Table

Kim drove him to Terrace on Wednesday and underwent surgery mid afternoon (just over 24 hours after the incident). This first surgery lasted 90 minutes and the following information was given to Mark:
Pinky no damage
Ring finger - lacerated , broken, dislocated, compressed to the size of pinky
Middle finger - slight cut on top of the finger but generally in tact ( good use in the future )
Index - took the most damage, severely lacerated , skin loss and Bone obliterated (surgeons wording).
Thumb - sliced inside of thumb - partially detached vertically along the Nail about 1/3 down but reattached with stitches

Mark underwent a second surgery on November 20th for a skin graft where they removed a section of skin from his hip to cover the exposed bone and tendons in the index finger - this gives the best opportunity for the fingers to heal with minimal scarring around the tendons.

Where we come in: Right now there’s lots of details about life post accident that Mark and Kim really don’t know what it is going to look like. Their focus is just about getting through to the next operation, and evaluating to see what happens. There are potentially multiple operations ahead. This is an obvious unexpected situation that now involves expenses they didn't know they would need including travel expenses back and forth to see the surgeon, medications, supplies and lost incomes. We want to take the time to give back to this amazing guy who gives so much back to our community.

From Marks facebook page "I know there’s a long road of recovery ahead for me and I appreciate any prayer, grace and support thatcould be extended to Kim and I at this time. We don’t know all challenges (opportunities) we will need to navigate, we also don’t know what complications or miraculous moments we will get to encounter - we will lean in!"
