Hi there, we are the Dixon Family. We are Dave, Sherri and Miles that live in Poway, California. Through an organization called Hearts4Refugees we have "adopted" or are "sponsoring" a Syrian refugee family, the Riads, that we are happy to call our new friends. They are

The Riads arrived in San Diego last summer through a resettlement agency associated with the UN. With respect to the family we have not asked for the whole story at our first lunch that they graciously cooked for us (pictured above). What we do know is that families have had a lengthy process before arriving here working through the 2 year vetting process. Once refugees arrive in the US they receive services through their resettlement agency for 1-3 months. Hearts4Refugees picks up where the resettlement agency leaves off. They offer support, through volunteers, to Syrian families by providing donations of clothes, basic necessities, and furniture; providing rental assistance; partnering with English language classes and tutoring services; providing translation and transportation services; and matching them with families like ours, where we further help them establish a new life here in America and-- perhaps most importantly-- become their friends and help them create a strong social network in their new home.
The Riads keep a busy schedule, attending English classes, caring for their kids and working odd jobs with limited benefits. We are offering our help with filling out job applications, finding job fairs, navigating our healthcare system and taxes, and just understanding the mail, but they are still struggling with a few basic expenses that we can’t cover alone. Their car needs about $1000 in repairs, and Hala has a painful toothache which she has been told requires a root canal/crown that isn’t completely covered through insurance.
We live in an amazing time when we can easily make a real difference to people who have survived a very devastating experience. We would be so grateful for anything you might be able to contribute to help secure a successful future for the Riads. The funds will be withdrawn by Sherri and used by Sherri to pay for the repair their van and fix Hala's tooth. If we are lucky enough to find a mechanic or dentist that is willing to work for less than our earliest estimates the funds will be used for rent and gas cards. Thank you!
