Help Us Mourn, and Reimagine, Democracy

We gather not just to grieve, but to ignite a new flame of hope.

This event is both a vigil and a vision. We are mourning the loss of what we once knew as democracy: the freedoms hard-fought and won over generations...only to watch them eroded by tyranny, both global and domestic. We mourn the rights so many gave their lives for: rights that women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and anyone outside the dominant power structure fought desperately to attain.

We mourn the freedom to read books that tell the truth, to watch shows that spread compassion and empathy, to hear trusted journalists speak freely on NPR or the evening news. We mourn a justice system that once had the potential to hold the powerful accountable.

But this is not only a mourning. This is a birth.

We are coming together to witness what remains of democracy give way to a new vision: one built not on individualism and power, but on community, resistance, and collective care. We are not rebuilding the old. We are creating something new - structures that serve everyone, not just the privileged few.

This event is a call to action. Alongside reflection and remembrance, we are bringing in partner organizations committed to direct action - groups that can help attendees plug into the work of change during and after the event.

How the funds will be used:

  • Portable toilets (so we can grieve and grow in sanitary conditions!)
  • City-required permitting costs (LPD coverage, LFD inspections for food trucks, electricity)
  • If funds allow: reimbursement for the required event insurance policy

Every dollar helps us create space for mourning, for dreaming, and...most importantly...for doing. If you believe in giving democracy a second chance, we hope you’ll support this effort.

Because community is resistance. And this is just the beginning.
