A Fresh Start in Detroit for a Trans Woman Seeking to Thrive
Donation protected
Hello all. I am moving from Providence, Rhode Island, to Detroit, Michigan, in May. I am raising funds for the moving costs. This is the exact quote for the moving cube plus one month's storage.
I am moving to Detroit for three reasons.
First, I have lots of family within a few hours, including my 98-year-old grandmother.
Second, rent for a comparable apartment is less than half of what I pay in Providence.
Third, and most importantly, I never found my kind of community here. It may seem counter-intuitive to move from a solidly blue state to a purplish one to find more trans people, but what happens in less progressive states is that the queer folks are more likely to clump together in their own enclaves for culture and safety. Detroit has some really cool queer neighborhoods, both of the upscale and – more important to me – trashy arty varieties, so I am feeling very good about my ability to find my people there. Related to that, I think that my job prospects for bartending and the like there will be higher, for it has more bars of various kinds and, tbh, I have found some low-level transphobia in getting hired here: trans existence right now is (ick) "political" and I think lots of folks in RI are scared of being seen like this, whereas Detroit has much more of a "hell yeah" attitude.
In conclusion, I will thrive in Detroit. Please help me defray my moving costs. Any amount is helpful to me. Thank you!
