A Fresh Start for Two Sisters after a Series of Tragedies

Hello, I’m L.R. Lam and I am starting this GoFundMe on behalf of beloved family members: two sisters who have had an incredibly difficult year that included the death of one parent, a violent crime, and the resulting incarceration of the other parent a couple of months later. I am not sharing their names or many details for their privacy, particularly because one of the sisters, who was the victim of the crime, is a minor.

Over the last year, they have faced an incredible number of challenges: legal, logistical, physical, administrative, and, of course, emotional. Despite this, they have already achieved so much. The elder sister (ES) is doing an amazing job raising the younger sister (YS), who is doing brilliantly in school and enjoys art. ES has gained a certificate and an entry-level job in her chosen field with the hope of completing her interrupted higher education in a few years. They are both in therapy and have begun the process of healing. We are so incredibly proud of them.

However, where they currently live is not somewhere they ever wished to stay long-term. It has unpleasant memories and other challenges that make it difficult to continue recovering. For years, even before the tragedies, they dreamed of starting over together in a state with positive, sentimental associations for them. While our family was able to help with initial support until things settled down, an interstate move is a large expense, especially with the rising cost of living. The sisters therefore require a little more assistance for their true fresh start, and this is where we hope you might be able to help. They are aiming to move this summer so that YS doesn’t have to transfer to a new school partway through the academic year.

Money raised from this GoFundMe would go towards:

First and last month rent at their new apartment.

Moving costs (shipping some of their possessions, fuel costs, potential hotels, etc).

Living expenses as there might be a short gap in employment during the actual move itself. ES is currently job hunting and aims to have a new role lined up in the new state.

If these needs are met, then anything above that would be a little bit of a savings buffer after a period of financial insecurity. There are also potential extra upcoming administrative costs like a name change.
