“S” is a 7 year old boy who needs our help. His mother was incarcerated at the time of his birth. A couple who had already raised their children opened their home and hearts to him at 2 weeks old. “S” was delayed in reaching developmental milestones , and was diagnosed with autism. He is non-verbal and communicates through gestures and a communication device. “S” loves to play outside, swing and especially loves water. He has also been diagnosed with ADHD. Although birth records are unavailable, it is highly likely he was exposed to drugs and/or alcohol before birth.
“S” receives speech and occupational therapy twice weekly. As therapists, we find a child will make greater gains if therapy activities can be continued at home in between therapy sessions. We made a home visit and realized “S” had outgrown and broken his indoor swing. The biggest problem we noticed is the family does not have a fenced in yard. As you can see from the picture, nothing separates him from his front door and access to a busy intersection. He is able to run from his adoptive mother and is very impulsive. She would love to allow him more time outside, but cannot take her eyes off him for a moment. She and her husband are retired and on a fixed income. They would like to install a fence, but are financially unable to do this at this time. They are great parents and take excellent care of this child.
He does not have a swing and we find swinging is very calming to him. We want to install a fence for a play area for “S” as well as a swingset or a tree swing and possibly a wagon or some other type of outdoor toys. This would provide “S” some much needed play and exercise as well as provide his mother peace of mind that he won’t impulsively run into the street.
We appreciate your support in creating a safe play environment for our patient. Together, we can make a difference for this child and his family.
