My name is Shawn Raven. I'm doing a fundraiser for my dear friend Jilly Smith.
In 2004 Jilly (Jill) was in a very serious car accident as a passenger, where she went through the windshield and the car landed on her causing glass to get lodged in her jaw along with a lot of titanium body parts. After seeing many specialists with varying opinions, and endless tests, she had to wait 20 years while in intense chronic pain for the surgery to have the glass finally removed. During these years, with glass consistently working its way out of her mandible, the bone grew each time which was not only painful, but disfiguring.
She has FINALLY undergone full mandibular reconstructive surgery due to the car accident on July 4, had 2" of bone removed from her jaw, and a cancerous tumor removed. Liquid diet for months.
Before being hospitalized, she had to end a friendship with a man due to verbal abuse and increasingly dangerous body language. For two weeks leading up to her surgery date, she spent nearly every day speaking with RCMP Constables and Victim Services in regards to his consistent harassment and stalking, which ended up escalating. She should have been celebrating with her friends. Instead she was scared, her family was scared, and her time was spent writing reports with RCMP Officers.
Whilst being hospitalized, the harassment continued. If you have Gmail you are unable to hard block an address and it ends up in Spam. This man started sending emails of pictures of..certain “body parts", dead animals...etc. sending her already hurting, confused state to the next level.
The travel costs, surgery bills, meds etc were already overwhelming, adding more unnecessary stress. Not a good picture. Being tough as nails, she powered though, not asking for help...seeing her break down, overwhelmed and helpless, was almost more than I could handle.
She thought everything was on the up and up, after spending....ALOT of money..savings depleted, RRSPs etc.
Upon coming home to recover, after losing her job as a dog walker/pet sitter due to surgery and being stalked, unable to leave her parents home for the unforeseeable future, her best friend and companion, her fur baby of 12 years suddenly passed away on July 17. With multiple tests (bloodwork, scans, biopsies) and ultimately the cost of euthanizing and cremations, the cost was in the $1000’s.
The toll on the emotions is indescribable. Jilly has suffered with CPTSD for the majority of her life, chronic pain, and now harassment and the loss of her beloved. She goes to regular therapy because of past traumas, as well as now current ones. She’s a firm believer in therapy and caring for her mind and body.
She will be unable to work for at least 3 months, give or take, and is scheduled for more surgery, and multiple tooth replacement due to the bone growth of her mandible over the years, where four of her bottom teeth are now so loose and exposed that they need to be removed and replaced. Dental surgery isn't cheap either...
She is a beautiful human being who has given everything, helping and healing wildlife, taking care of other's and their fur babies (and feathered or scaled).
She has done nothing but look after others...it would be a miracle if we, as a collective, could give back and help this wonderful, caring human being, to get a start on the life she deserves to live.
