Help ignite change by supporting a daring pan-African magazine from Ethiopia. Fatteh’s mission is to illuminate the lives of the millions of ‘invisible’ LGBTQ+ people across the region. On a continent where 33 of the 54 countries criminalise same-sex relations, Africa’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities are among the most marginalised and persecuted in the world — but also some of the most vibrant and resilient.

Fatteh launched in August 2025 to tell their stories — our stories — from the inside. Our contributors often risk their lives to do so. We give readers an opportunity to see themselves fully reflected and authentically represented, something that’s unimaginable in the mainstream media across much of the continent. We use journalism as a tool for advocacy: raising awareness, increasing visibility, challenging harmful narratives, fostering acceptance, attracting allies and building solidarity.

Our bilingual reporting, in both English and Amharic, chronicles everyday life and extraordinary moments and helps human rights defenders hold leaders to account. But most important of all, it is a refuge for people in search of hope, community and guidance.

Why your support matters

At a time when LGBTQ+ people face growing repression, violence and harsher laws across much of Africa, platforms like Fatteh are a lifeline. Without independent LGBTQ+ media, abuse goes unchallenged, history goes undocumented and communities lose their ability to share their struggles as well as their triumphs.

Your support helps ensure these voices are no longer silenced or distorted. Join our effort to inform, inspire and empower people whose stories deserve to be told on their own terms. Help them fight for the security, dignity and equality they need.

Why we’re fundraising

Fatteh has grown through care and largely unpaid labour. This campaign helps us move from survival to sustainability. We’re raising funds to:

  • Pay contributors (writers, editors, creatives) who can no longer afford to volunteer
  • Cover translation costs (English ↔ Amharic)
  • Maintain and secure our website
  • Manage social media and community engagement
  • Cover essential publishing, subscription and accessibility tool costs

Donation tiers (optional)

£25 → Social media shout-out [preferred name]*
£50 → Thank you email + special mention in published articles* (e.g. “This article is brought to you by [preferred name]”)
£100 → Thank you email + special mention in published articles and on social media* (e.g. “This article is brought to you by [preferred name]”)

*If you prefer anonymity or require confidentiality, please let us know and we will refrain from disclosing your donation*

Every contribution — no matter the amount — helps us harness the soft power of storytelling for this urgent cause. Thank you for believing in our mission and helping Fatteh to flourish.

With gratitude,
