Gala's birthday wish of bring light to our family
It’s my birthday in a few days!!!
This birthday is a little different. As many of you may know, 14 years ago I left the US on a mission that changed my life and lead me to my amazing kids and my true home in Haiti. Here, thirteen small kids decided to put their faith in me as the head of the Kay Angel family, entrusting their lives to me. I had no clue at the time what kind of crazy adventures I had signed up for, but one thing was clear from the start, I was ready to sacrifice many of the comforts I grew up with in the modern world for the love of my children and being a part of the community in Haiti in which I call home.
For the past 18 years since joining my organization, my journey has been filled with incredible highs and challenging lows, but boy have I acquired some stories along the way. I’ve defiantly chose an extreme life, yet no matter how challenging its been, I have done my best to remain a source of strength for kids and my organization .
For nearly 4 years now, our town has been without power. Yup…..none. Our daily life is a unique blend of simplicity, adaptation and resilience and I’m proud that my family and I have learned how to survive with what some people would consider “nuts”. Our humble home has been powered by 2 small camping power banks . Me and my kids learned how to live a simpler life and honestly its not so bad. Then college came knocking on our door…
My oldest has been accepted in to a 4 year year Social work program. She is 1/2 way through her second year and kicking butt. She has been taking her online courses and she has relied on the incredible generosity of a friend who shared power and internet with her. Now our friend is moving and the urgency to bring our family into the modern age of solar power has become crucial.
I’ve managed to secure some initial support, but navigating this new new territory of solar installation has brought some unexpected expenses. This week is my birthday!!! I’m very humbly reaching out for the final push to get our solar system fully installed.
Having Power will transform our lives. It means:
uninterrupted education- ensuring my eldest can continue her studies and open up learning opportunities for the younger children.
food security- allowing for proper food storage, helping us plan for hard times and save a little money in country who’s food prices change with the direction of the wind.
connection to the world- staying informed , communications with loved ones, and access to vital resources.
Creating family memories with my kids like movie nights or trying out strange recipes like bean chocolate pudding (blender required).
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering a birthday gift that will bring lasting light, opportunity, and a brighter future for me and my family. Your kindness and generosity will make this a birthday unforgettable.
Please consider donating and sharing our story!!! Thank you!!!
