Zim Food drive : A dollar will help

Donation protected
PHASE 3:
An inclusive campaign/A GoFundMe Campaign/ Please donate a dollar.

Do you have a dollar to spare to feed a child/ senior/ family in need? We would be most grateful if you could donate a dollar to help us buy food baskets to assist ordinary Zimbabwean children and Seniors going through a rough patch because of the drought.

For transparency reasons, GoFundMe automatically deducts a 5% fee from each donation we recieve.  In addition, their payment processor Wepay charges 2.9% + $0.30 per donation.  In total we will be charged 7.9% + $0.30 per donation.  If you make a payment of $100, we would get $91.80.  Please keep the above in mind when you make a donation.  It would help us a lot if you could please donate slightly above a dollar to help us cover the GoFundMe and Wepay fees.

We have set our fudraising campaign goal at $20 000.  At $50 US a food basket we can feed 400 families for a month.  We could feed more families and we have the capacity to do so but that depends on your willingness to support us to do much more.

Food baskets will be delivered by a group of volunteers made up of a women's interdenominational group.  They will pick up food baskets from our wholesalers and travel to communities identified by our facebook group.  We have delivered food baskets to one community (Musilahove Silobela Zimbabwe), for three consecutive months.  Once a community is identifies our volunteers will approach the community through churches and ask for a list of known families that need help.  Help is not limited to the Church communities only, we stressed that non church members, particularly child headed families and seniors are our group of interest.  We have a list of 8 other communities that we are unable to help and are counting on you to assist.

Your dollar has the power to make a strong statement that as a nation we can not sit back and watch our children and seniors go to bed hungry.

The Musila Hove community was identified by a Church minister who went to preach as a visitor and he was disheartened by the poverty in the community.  He reported that before  they could conduct the service, they had to buy bread and orange juice (mazoe).  This story and news reports motivated us to start a food drive.

Over one million Zimbabweans live in the diaspora, our three food drive administrators included, 20 of our sponsors included.  This GoFundMe campaign is directed to Zimbabweans living in the diaspora and those in Zimbabwe too, our friends of diverse country/ racial/ cultural backgrounds and others who care for the well being of children and seniors in any part of the world.  We have an ethical and moral obligation to make sure that children, child headed families, seniors and other disadvantaged people have at least a meal or two a day, given that there are so many resources and enough food to go around.  We truly believe that Zimbabweans in the diaspora, people in Zimbabwe with a dollar to spare, our friends from different countries, well wishers and those that simply care, can solve the serious problem happening in Zimbawe right now.  A problem of, people like you and I, that might be going to bed hungry tonight.  Thank you for understanding.

We have proved over the last three months that at least 25 families can be fed on aproximately $1250 US a month.  Please visit our facebook page and group to see what we have been working on to date.  Please search for Food drive for Rural Zimbabwe Amalima/ Humwe/ Nhimbe/ Harambe.  Our facebook page and group will answer most of your questions pertaining to Accountability, procurement, how the food baskets are distributed.  Our facebook group also posted videos of the work we have done so far.  Please feel free to like our Facebook page and join our Facebook group.

On February 2, 2016 a food drive was started on Facebook. This was in response to photographs,  news reports and word of mouth accounts of a severe drought  in Zimbabwe.  The idea was shared among Facebook friends where ordinary/ regular people could help other ordinary people in Zimbabwe with food baskets to last a month for an average Zimbabwean family. The group agreed on the contents of a food basket (Maize meal/cornmeal, sugar beans, cooking oil, sugar, salt, peanut butter, anchovies/ dried fish and on the second round of food deliveries a bar of soap). The food baskets are priced at $50 US each. To date 24 ordinary people from the UK, Canada, Australia, Sweden, and Zimbabwe, have purchased food baskets and fed more than 27 families for three consecutive months in Musilahove Silobela Zimbabwe.  8 ordinary people have made commitments to sponsor their families for the duration of the drought and others made a once off payment.

The group is administered by Mable Chabot, Tsungi Lubisse and me, (Angela Rudo).

The food drive is volunteer driven. A food drive Amalima/ humwe/ nhimbe/ harambe, for the most affected in rural Zimbabwe. We are not a NGO or organization with affiliations to any religious or political organization. We are friends with Zimbabwean ties, African ties, including our friends and colleagues from diverse backgrounds who decided to work together via social media, with the common goal of assisting the most vulnerable (Seniors and Children).

We hope to fund raise and accept food items, through this gofundme campaign, partnering with Marathons, organizing fundraising events, working with Churches and other interested parties and providing basic food items like maize meal, beans, peanut butter and other non perishable food items. Group members  have contributed in various ways, including ideas, selecting areas that are most affected, volunteering, among other roles as the need arises .

The Zimbabwean staple diet is reasonably priced, and any help will be most appreciated. We believe a small contribution goes a long way, and everyone can do something.  We are therefore asking you to make a single donation of one dollar to help our cause.

Below is a visual presentation/ flow chart of the fooddrive before our gofundme campaign.

We will continue with the Facebook campaign.  This gofundme campaign is phase 3 of our fooddrive. Many Zimbabweans in the diaspora gave feedback that purchasing a food basket was difficult becasue their immediate extended family was a priority during the drought.  This gofundme campaign is meant to encourage Zimbabeans in the Diaspora, their friends, our well wishers and anyone else concerned about childern and seniors to please donate a dollar to help a cause we all deeply care about.

Donations recieved from this gofundme campaign will be used to buy food baskets in Zimbabwe. Sending money to Zimbabwe is the most efficient way to provide food aid.  Shiping food items and having paid staff to recieve, clear food items through customs in Zimbabwe will mean that there will not be enough money left over to buy food for the most needy during the drought.  Food deliveries have been through volunteers to date.   Zimbabwe does not accept genetically modified food items and clearing shipped items through custom and boarder services may take too long. We are respecting Zimbabwean Laws and regulations. Buying food baskets in Zimbabwe also supports local and neighbouring country (Zambia, South Africa etc) businesses and farmers.

The only time the money donated through this gofundme campaign will be used outside Zimbabwe is if or when the media, our wholesaler or volunteers report that the food items in Zimbabwe have run out. We will post such a notification on this page and discuss and consult with our Facebook group members (The group name on Facebook is Food Drive for Rural Zimbabwe Amalima/ Nhimbe / Humwe / Harambe). Please feel free to ask questions in the Facebook group or our Page.

Please meet four families that have benefited from our fooddrive to date

Child headed family photographs have been blurred for child ptotection reasons and to protect the identities of children.

These two very young children walked a long distance alone to pick up food baskets.  They were too young to carry food baskets as the baskets were heavy.
