The Ballyhaunis Community Hall has been a hub for so much activity in our town since it was built in 1940.
Over the years the hall has hosted bingo nights, youth discos, community theatre, Irish dance performances, trad sessions, and markets to name a few. It has also hosted numerous birthdays, weddings, family reunions and holiday gatherings. The community hall is home to Foroige, Big Brother Big Sister, and many youth outreach programmes, as well as parent toddler group, table tennis, yoga, Zumba, art classes and language cafe.
The hall has not had any considerable repairs since its construction and is now in urgent need of an upgrade.
We are holding this virtual "Walk to New York" to raise funds for the renovation works. The renovation works include major internal alterations to meet fire safety and disabled access.
The internal works will include a modern new kitchen, modern heating system, paint work and flooring in the main hall and meeting rooms. Works also include widening the current stage and construction of new bathrooms and a changing rooms making life a lot easier for performers and spectators.
Construction works are due to commence this month and your contributions will help us ensure the new hall will be ready for use in the new year.
It is 4,940km from Ballyhaunis to New York. We are calling on all families, students, runners and walkers to collectively clock up 4,940km from Sept 19th - Oct 3rd, 2020.
Over the two weeks, participants will submit their distances covered to a WhatsApp group. Tallies will be counted at the end of each day and posted on the Ballyhaunis Community Council Facebook page. On Saturday, Oct 3rd, we will walk the remaining distance together around the town (details to be shared closer to the date).
