My name is Lisa Marie Parris (affectionately known as Lea) . I am a proud mum of 3. A son and 2 little girls.
While I was in St. Kitts & Nevis 4 months ago, volunteering (Raising awareness and educating on the signs and symptoms of cancer, supporting families and fundraising to help provide financial assistance to people in need of life saving treatment); I developed a swollen abdomen and had to return home to the UK. Within a week I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in my liver, spine and bowel.
This was an enormous shock and very emotional for the whole family. After the initial shock, I felt very grateful to be able to access the support, care and treatment methods to prolong my life here in the UK on the NHS.
I reflected on those in St. Kitts and Nevis who were also going through their own challenges with cancer and I knew that they were not given a fighting chance the way I was because they do not have an NHS or cancer care specialists like the UK and they have the added burden of having to find money to pay for expensive lifesaving treatment which most do not have.
9 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
I decided to use my experience to educate and raise awareness and offer support and care to people on the Caribbean Island of Nevis where there was no cancer awareness, support or accessible treatment or care and where many were dying and many living with the financial, emotional, physical and psychological burdens that having cancer brings. I set up Pink Lily Cancer Care in Nevis and extended the support to Sister Island of St. Kitts.
This means so much to me because I would like to continue my volunteering in St. Kitts & Nevis and share all I have learnt, researched and experienced in the last 4 months to bring hope to many living with cancer, to encourage people to enhance the quality of their lives by making positive lifestyle changes and to help raise awareness that the early detection of cancer saves lives.
We will focusing our attention on having healthier bodies, eating the right portions of good nutritious foods that are so readily available; some of which have properties to stop cancer growing and that help our bodies heal.
I will be promoting regular exercise for physical fitness and recovery; relaxation, getting a good night sleep, having fun, laughing a lot and doing things that make you feel good.
We are Changing the Face of Cancer
by encouraging you to be strong, courageous, have faith, hope and give thanks for every new day.
I will be grateful beyond words for your support to help me educate and support others during their darkest hours of uncertainty, fear and anxiety; whose lives are turned upside down by a diagnosis of cancer and those too afraid to go to the doctor when they suspect something is wrong.
Help Beat Cancer Sooner in countries where treatment and support is limited and where income is low but treatment costs are high.
By working together, we can make a difference!
Thank you so much.
