Rebuilding Vivian's House
Donation protected
I am collaborating with an organization called Rebuilding Together Orlando on a project in our Orlando community for a 72 year old woman who has been living without running water in her house for over 2 years. She had a pipe leak in a bathroom and didn't have the funds to repair it, and was too proud to ask for assistance. She also developed a roof leak which she was not able to afford to fix. Her house became over run with mold and she finally asked her family for help.
Her family was able to help by placing a new roof on her home, and then realizing the depth of the project is now working hand in hand with an amazing organization called Rebuilding Together Orlando. RTO focuses on rebuilding existing homes of those who own their homes, but can't afford to fix or maintain them. Vivian had to discard anything in her home that was porous due to the mold- including all her clothes, linens, books, paper, blankets, furniture, mattresses, etc.
Tiles laid with asbestos were discovered under the carpet and had to be removed at a very high expense.
RTO is in the process of having the mold remediated, and is continuing to work with vendors in the Orlando area to restore her home to a healthy safe place for her to continue to age in place for the next 25 years.
We had a fantastic volunteer day on Saturday in which 25 people came out to help her to clear her yard, trim trees, remove debris from an old shed, and fully primed and painted the exterior of her home. We are in need of assistance with continued repairs specifically a licensed electrician to upgrade the electrical to current code (all walls are currently removed), replacing old jalousie windows, drywall, and someone to lay tile throughout the house.
If you are able to donate, the funds will go directly to the repairs currently needed through Rebuilding Together Orlando, and to replacing the items which Vivian had to discard. Vivian's goal is to create a safe home for her 2 year old grandson to be able to come visit.
This project is so near and dear to my heart because Vivian is my mother in law, and her grandson is my son. I want nothing more than Alex's grandmother to have a safe and healthy home to live in and for us all to be able to visit with her there. Our family would be so grateful to have your assistance as we work to rebuild her home together with the group from RTO.
THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts.
