After years of being unable to conceive, Tania and her husband, Rene, cried with joy when they learned she was pregnant. Bigger news was yet to come.
At Tania’s first ultrasound appointment, her doctor grew quiet. Tania wondered if there was something wrong with her child. Had the baby’s heart stopped beating?
Gently, her doctor told her to be calm and to take a few deep breaths.
Then she told Tania that she had seen more than one baby.
“I’m having twins?” Tania asked.
“More than twins.”
“Triplets?”
“Tania”, said her doctor, “You are carrying four babies.”
Rene and Tania will be wonderful parents. Even so, bringing four premie newborns home and taking care of them will be exhausting. Managing it without help will be impossible.
Tania is on bedrest. She has had to quit her job, significantly cutting their income.
Babies are expensive, and the quads will cost four times everything associated with a baby. They will require four times as many diapers, clothes, blankets, bottles and formula. There will be four times as much laundry, diapering, bathing, and rocking the babies. Four times as many day and night feedings. (Remember those?)
There will be huge medical bills, because the babies (probably weighing 1 1/2 pounds) are expected to stay in the NICU for two months or more. They will still be premies when they leave the hospital at about 4 pounds each.
