Victoria's Medical Brigade Fundraiser (Ghana)

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

Thank you for being here!

I’m Victoria and I’m in my third year of medical school at Kings College London. This summer I am incredibly fortunate to participate in a Global Medical Brigade to Ghana alongside volunteers from my university, fundraising to make this a reality!

Why am I doing this?

To me, healthcare is more than just administering treatment, taking medications, or being hospitalised. I am a firm believer in the emphasis of an important step before all of this - preventative medicine. I have seen first-hand the impact of not knowing what ‘protecting your health' looks like or not understanding the warning signs of when an illness is arising in yourself or a loved one. I am passionate about promoting preventative medicine through educating and empowering people regarding their health to improve peoples’ overall wellbeing which in turn ultimately prevents disease, disability, and death: also serving as means of tackling health inequalities.

I believe everyone deserves the chance to live a healthy full life and preventative care is one critical way to achieve this. As a girl born in Nigeria, I am motivated to understand the healthcare systems in Africa better to one day build a project which increases the quality of life for vulnerable African adults and children. I strongly believe Global Brigade is the start of this journey. By supporting me financially with this initiative you will help vulnerable people get access to preventative care and thus mitigate the risk of them suffering from chronic diseases such as malaria.

What is Global Medical Brigades?

Global Brigades is the largest student-led movement for global health! They work across the world with communities to resolve health and economic disparities and ultimately empower a community and I am inspired to join such an organisation with their work in Ghana! The 8-day trip involves:

- setting up a medical clinic in which I and other volunteers will take vital signs from patients (e.g. temperature and blood pressure)
- taking histories (to discuss why they are in the clinic)
- shadow in consultations
- support in malaria testing
- screen patients for chronic diseases
- deliver post-op care and more

There is a holistic approach to the care delivered in the free clinics including dentistry, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynaecology and physiotherapy that patients would receive, and I will aid with. I will also lead a public health education workshop for children and adults in disease prevention, dental care, and personal health.

Why Am I Fundraising?

This is such an amazing initiative that I am looking forward to embarking on!
For myself, your financial support would go towards: flights, transport, vaccinations, accommodation, insurance.
For the project, your financial support would go towards: investing in the community facilities and providing an ongoing free clinic for the community in Ghana.

A full breakdown of the costs is below for reference.

I would be incredibly grateful for any contributions to this! Thank you so much for your support and I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to an incredible initiative.

God bless you <3
