What is Velo Allegro's Bikes for Kids?

Velo Allegro Cycling Club is based in Long Beach, California. Part of the club’s mission is to promote cycling in the local community.

Velo Allegro and the Long Beach YMCA, as well as our generous sponsors and club members see a fantastic opportunity to help the youth of Long Beach through the simple act of owning a new bike.

Our target is an entire 3rd grade class at an underserved school within the Long Beach Unified School District. The simple gift of a bike can be magical and can serve as a catalyst for a young person toward a life-long relationship and love for riding. Eligible schools have over 90% of students on financial assistance programs. An essay contest is open to all third-grade students enrolled in the school. To be eligible to win a bike, students must write an essay that describes how a bike will help them make their community a better place. The author of the best essay from each class will receive a free bike along with a lock and helmet. This year, we will be providing bikes to 125 students!

During a third-grade assembly, teachers read their winning essay to the audience and invite the author to come up and receive their brand-new bike. Shortly after all the winning essays are read, students are surprised to find out that everyone will receive a bike. Pandemonium breaks out!
