Refugee Trans Initiative is a transgender-led Organization in Kenya that aims at improving the needs and rights of transgender refugees through advocacy and shelter that houses transgender rights defenders at risk. It`s home to transgender refugees who flee persecution and those who have been subjected to transphobic attacks within their community.

Our work has been a long journey filled with obstacles and challenges that we look forward to working towards limiting, such as:

1. Police raids

2. Trans-phobic threats from the local community

3. Theft cases

4. Limited rights to movement.

5. Employment opportunities.

6. Social inclusion [Religious and Education facilities]

Now we need your urgent support to ensure Transgender refugees in Kenya's safety, well-being and accessibility to healthcare and sustainable livelihood.

The focus will be on mental health and livelihood projects.

Some of the projects that can become a reality with your support:

LIVELIHOOD RESTORATION

Through this, we will survey what livelihood can be implemented within transgender refugee shelters that will create sustainability of the shelter and a sense of employment to the beneficiaries reducing the risks that come with survival sex work practices.

Such livelihood programs might include Art programs, kitchen gardening, poultry etc.

PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT GROUP THERAPY

The formation of this could mirror the model explored in terms of the transgender refugee community and incorporate the sustainable elements of community-based protection inherent in the CBO-led psychosocial intervention where transgender refugees themselves facilitate sessions minimizing the rate of suicide attempts and monitoring mental health/depression chances
