A Family’s Fight for Justice on Multiple Fronts
For decades, our family has stood on the front lines of environmental and health advocacy, fighting for the well-being of marginalized communities. Today, we are facing an unprecedented, multi-front crisis of our own. We are urgently seeking support to allow travel 1,500 miles to lay a remarkable father to rest, secure safe rehabilitative, supportive housing for our disabled son, and fund our continued legal fight against housing injustice and public housing neglect.
Honoring a Father’s Legacy: A Final Goodbye
Amidst our ongoing fight for safe housing and our son's life, tragedy has struck our family with the passing of our father, at the age of 92.
Our father was a man of profound impact and resilience. Born into Appalachian poverty, he earned a scholarship to the University of Virginia and dedicated his life to community health, building nine medical clinics that once treated over 10,000 patients a month. He raised seven children and devotedly loved his wife Linda for nearly six decades. One of the proudest moments of his remarkable life was standing in the Oval Office with his family to witness his nephew's swearing-in as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.
We are currently 1,500 miles away in Colorado, unable to make the journey without immediate assistance. Household disability expenses and legal fees associated with our son's United States citizenship have exhausted our small emergency fund. We have spent every waking moment fighting tirelessly for our family’s safety and health. Our family hopes to experience the dignity and closure of participating in funeral services for our father.
The Current Crisis: Toxic and Lawless Living Conditions
You would probably be shocked to hear that a fight for a safe living environment is happening at our own front door. The living conditions at our current residence, a subsidized housing complex for the disabled and elderly, have become entirely untenable.
Ongoing, severe bio-hazards exist within the community include: hoarder piles, bedbugs, mold, meth contamination, pet waste, and other vectors. These have triggered debilitating cytokine storms for a member of our family who is immunocompromised. This has resulted in seemingly perpetual bouts of severe illness and a devastating loss of quality of life. We have reported this to all relevant regulatory agencies, yet they do nothing and attempt to punish whistleblowers with retaliatory efforts. Compounding the environmental hazards, the housing complex has become lawless, overrun by open substance trafficking and and dangerous, often illicit activity. It is an environment that is profoundly unsafe and fundamentally uninhabitable, especially for a minor child.
An Urgent Rescue: Securing a Future for Our Son
Because of these horrific conditions, we made the agonizing decision that our teenage son could not join us here. Exposing a vulnerable teenager—who is actively working to overcome early parental alienation, severe psycho social trauma, and a history of substance abuse—to a toxic environment rampant with drug activity was out of the question.
As a result, he remained in San Juan de Chamula, Chiapas, Mexico where he remains with other family. However, escalating cartel violence in the region has placed him in grave, immediate danger. Therefore, we must bring him back to the United States immediately.
As a U.S. citizen, he is entitled to and desperately needs access to behavioral health, educational and rehabilitative programs. He has diagnosed developmental learning disabilities that require urgent intervention. Upon his arrival to the United States we will coordinate admission with a specialty program for adolescents of similar circumstancs.
We are seeking funds to secure his immediate admission into a specialized residential facility in the U.S. where he can receive an Individualized Education Program (IEP/ESE), comprehensive therapies, and the safe, rehabilitative environment he deserves to rebuild his life.

Facilitating his safe extraction from Mexico and immediate admission into a U.S. residential treatment and educational facility equipped for his unique developmental and psycho social needs.
Legal & Administrative Advocacy:
Funding the legal representation, court fees, record-retrieval fees, supplies, equipment, and travel required to fight the housing injustices at Orchard Place Apartments Englewood, Colorado. In addition, we hope our outcome serves as the framework for future social housing initiatives that will benefit vulnerable populations residing in US public housing.
