In 2020, due to COVID 19 and fears of cross-contamination, many organizations stopped accepting clothing donations. Though this decision was made with public safety in mind, it left an ever-growing population of underserved New Yorkers with vanishing resources and limited access to quality clean clothes for themselves and their families, many of whom are single mothers.

In light of this widening disparity gap, and in honor of Women’s History Month, since February 2021, The Gift Shop BK has collected over 4000 articles of clothes, 500 men’s suits, and 375 women’s suits via donations, had all the clothing professionally cleaned, and then on Saturday, March 27th, 2021, transformed the beautifully restored Brooklyn Bank into a Boutique style environment where approximately 574 families and countless individuals from all over New York City were able to shop for free.

With our mission of helping the community find immediate and tangible support, with access to quality clothing in an environment that is both in line with their needs and respectful of their circumstances, we were also able to provide approximately 300 graduates transitioning into the workforce, and men and women displaced due to the COVID-19 pandemic with suits and other professional attire.  Each attendee also received curated Sanitary Care Packages; which included toiletries, feminine hygiene products, and other hygienic items.

Post-event, we’ve partnered with community organizations that will be receiving the remaining professionally-cleaned clothes from this round of collections and donating them to citizens in need throughout New York City.

It is our mission with The Gift Shop BK to assist our neighbors in accessing quality clothing in an environment that is both in line with their needs and respectful of their circumstances.
