"We need your help to create beautiful art in the Castro during the Coronavirus crisis."
Currently, more than 30 businesses in the Castro have boarded up their storefronts following the shelter in place order. We want to turn those unsightly boards into canvases for gorgeous and inspiring murals to bring hope and joy back to San Francisco’s vibrant cultural center. We are pairing artists and businesses in order to create a series of beautiful murals and need your financial help to make it happen.!
The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District & Castro Merchants have joined forces to make this mural project a reality, sourcing the artists and coordinating with businesses. This GoFundMe is to raise money to help compensate those artists for their time and for paint supplies.
As you can imagine, those working in the arts are incredibly hard hit by the Coronavirus crisis and could use our support right now. Without the tireless contributions of artists, San Francisco would not be the cultural center of California and the west coast it has been for more than a century.
Your donation will also support business in the Castro. As residents venture out to get takeout food and drink, or other curbside pickup items, they will see the murals - many of which feature LGBTQ pioneer Harvey Milk - and will be reminded of what the Castro means to San Francisco and why it should be supported.
"We have received support from Paint the Void and Cliff’s Variety who have already lended a hand to start painting storefronts, but much more support is needed.
Our goal is to raise $5000.00 which will cover the cost for a small stipend for the artist and their art supplies which will help paint at least seven more storefronts (five have already been completed).
The Castro neighborhood has had a profound history not just locally but globally, as a vibrant, colorful and iconic community. It's all up to us to show our support and appreciation during these challenging times to a neighborhood that has given our community so much. Please help us bring back the much-needed vibrant spirit of the Castro.
