Prof Caroline Hossein is a scholar who examines informal institutions and people focused businesses. She coined the concept of The Black Social Economy. She works with community and we want her to know that we value her scholarship. This is work that has won many awards but has faced push back by elites including those at York University.

For years, Prof Hossein was subject to human rights abuses. In 2021 she filed an application of anti Black racism and sexism at the HRTO against York University and two male colleagues. While York University has admitted that Anti-Black racism is indeed a pervasive issue, they refused to stop the abuse. Instead York Admin employs expensive lawyers using taxpayer monies and student tuition.

Through a very detailed application Prof Hossein has listed the harms and discrimination she encountered as a Black professor from 2012 to 2020. York won't settle and Prof Hossein has devoted $48k on legal fees and will be spending another $30-$40k.

This is so wrong.

As a group of community people, we are very concerned that York University will not apologize or accept when anti black racism and sexism is happening on campus.

How and why can York University (who claims to have debt) draw on student tuition and state funds to hire fancy lawyers against a Black woman professor who fights for working-class people?

This is not right.

Prof Hossein has since left York University, and her matter needs to be heard at the HRTO. But this will cost more money.
