My dear friend Lauren — only 38 years old — was diagnosed last week with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). It’s Stage 1 but Grade 3, which means it’s fast-moving and needs immediate treatment. Although less than 15% of all breast cancers are TNBC, her mom (at age 45), grandmother, and great-grandmother all passed away from it. Devastatingly, Lauren also recently learned she carries the BRCA1 gene, putting her at even higher risk for future breast and ovarian cancer.

She first discovered a lump in March 2025. She and her husband, Tim —a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan — relocated their entire family across the country to seek care at a specialized medical center. The center not only offered advanced treatment for her diagnosis but could also address her chronic Lyme disease, which she has been living with for over 25 years. Although the initial lump was benign, Lauren stayed at the clinic for her Lyme treatment — an intensive process that stretched to 14 weeks, 5 longer than expected, due to COVID setbacks and sensitivity to several therapies. Despite the challenges, the treatment was highly effective and significantly reduced her symptoms. Just as they were preparing to return home, a follow-up scan showed a second mass in the same breast. This one is malignant.
