From Kit's Mom-
Most recent update 5/30/25
We need to move Kit to a better care facility in CA.
Kit has been repeatedly treated poorly at the current nicu he is in, we have exhausted all options of remedying his care at the current hospital. They cannot find anything wrong with his lungs or explain his breathing difficulties, yet refuse to acknowledge the setbacks and injuries documented throughout his care here in Hawaii. Kit has a broken clavicle bone. He has been on trophic feeding for literal months of his stay at this hospital despite our pleas to feed him in the beginning. He isn't growing properly because of the lack of feeding initially. He has bleeding sores in his neck from lack of care. We need to get answers and get him the care he deserves. He has spent 5 months in a hospital room, has never had a real bath, seen the sun, felt the air outside. The current hospital continues to deny us our rights as parents. We believe kit is displaying symptoms of fat buildup in his pulmonary system (which is expressly warned out on the label for a drip he's been receiving) yet the team refuses to consider it- even though they can't find anything else wrong with his lungs. We will need to pay up front and out of pocket to transfer him to care at Choc (childrens hospital orange county) in California. Your donations will make this happen, and help us cover life expenses while we make the transition.
Original fundraiser-
The Unthinkable Reality We're Facing:
Kit is fighting for his life in the hospital, heavily sedated and on full ventilator support after being reintubated this morning. This isn't the first time—he's been intubated multiple times as his condition continues to worsen despite our desperate advocacy for better care. His suffering is hard to put into words.
Kit was born on January 9th, we've been in this for months and it has no end in sight.
What's Happening to Our Family-
While he battles for each breath, we're facing an impossible situation:
We've been displaced to a neighboring island, separated from our support network
We're working any markets that will accept our handmade items and photography work.
Despite constant efforts for alternative income, we haven't found anything that pays enough for even basic rent on Oahu.
Most critically: We need to be present with our son right now
Every day we spend working to make ends meet is a day we can't be fully present at our baby's bedside during what could be his final moments.
Medical Nightmare:
Kit has suffered through inconsistent care plans and what we believe are poor medical decisions. The emotional toll of watching our baby endure this while feeling powerless to help has been unbearable. We've become not just parents but full-time advocates in a medical system that keeps failing him.
What Your Support Will Do:
Your donation will directly enable
Housing security so we can stay near Kit's hospital
Basic living expenses so we can focus on being with our child instead of working non-stop.
Resources to seek additional medical opinions if necessary
A chance for our family to be together during this critical time
Pressure alleviation on a very emotionally, spiritually and physically taxed mom (and dad).
From Our Hearts to Yours
We never imagined asking for help like this. We've always worked hard and been self-sufficient. But when your child's life hangs in the balance, pride takes a backseat to necessity.
If you're a parent, imagine being forced to choose between working to keep a roof over your head or being present with your critically ill child. If you're not a parent, imagine the heartbreak of not being able to be there for the person you love most in the world when they need you.
Any amount helps—whether it's $5 or $500. Sharing this campaign could help it reach someone who can make a significant difference in our family's life when we need it most.

Thank you for seeing us in this time of needed support and helping us find a way through our darkest hour.
With profound gratitude,
Sam and Toph
