After almost a decade at their current location in Richton Park, Illinois, economic development plans by the Village is forcing Benjamin O. Davis VFW Post 311 to look for new quarters.
The Post is home to 300 veterans who have served in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq. In addition, there are 72 Auxiliary members who also participate in The Post’s community activities and services to military families.
Benjamin O. Davis VFW Post 311 is named in honor of two African American heroes. Benjamin O. Davis Sr. was the first African American Brigadier General in the Unites States Army. Following in the steps of his father, Benjamin O. Davis Jr. broke racial barriers by becoming the first African American General in the United States Air Force and Commander of the World War II Tuskegee Airmen.
Members of this Post have taken to heart the legacies that they must live up to in honoring these two soldiers. As such, VFW Post 311 is one of the most stellar VFW Posts in the State of Illinois earning coveted awards annually such as “All American” and “All State” designations for numerous years. It is the only Post in Illinois that hosts a “Stand Down” to provide services and resources to homeless and indigent veterans.
Benjamin O. Davis Post 311 provides support to over 1,000 veterans and their family members yearly. The loss of these services would add to the continuing plight of the “forgotten soldier”.
