We just did something big: we purchased the Somerville Theatre building in Davis Square, securing its future as a home for film, live performance, and community gathering for generations to come.
Making that happen meant taking on significant financing — a mix of a bank loan and support from private lenders who believe in this place. It was a leap of faith, made because the alternative, losing the theatre to developers or a use that erases its history, wasn't one we were willing to risk.
The audience is here. The programming is here. What we need now is help to get us through the near term, and to put the theatre on solid footing for the long haul.
That's where you come in. Every dollar raised through this campaign goes directly toward paying down the debt we took on to secure this building: paying off loans, reducing our interest costs, protecting the theatre's long-term stability, and keeping it in the community's hands.
A note on how this works: We don't yet have nonprofit status in place, so donations here aren't tax-deductible. All funds raised, whether we reach our goal or not, go directly toward the theatre's acquisition debt. We're being upfront about that because we want you to know exactly what your support does.
Use of funds:
- Pays down principal and interest on the theatre's acquisition financing
- Honors our commitments to the lenders — including generous private supporters — who made this purchase possible
- Strengthens the theatre's long-term financial footing as a sustainable, community-owned venue
This support is a meaningful step toward putting the Somerville Theatre's finances on stable, sustainable ground.
