Black Rhino Conservation Internship
Donation protected
Hello friends, family, colleagues, and strangers!
In May (2016), I will finally be graduating from college to pursue a field in wildlife conservation. As many of you know, I have been pursuing this for a very long time and even though it has been a never ending struggle, it is completely worth it.
Last month I finally found an organization that offers an internship working with Black rhinoceroses. As most of you know, there is a special place in my heart for these amazing creatures and I have always hoped to have a chance to work with them and help with conservation efforts. I applied for a 4-6 week long internship starting in June 2016.
Today, I received an email accepting my application and approving me for the internship! After requesting a price breakdown in US dollars ( it was originally presented in ZAR), the cost for the 4-week internship is $1800 (UPDATE! They are transistioning between organizations and the price just went down! WOOHOO!) & airfare is estimated at $2000 round-trip. The extra 2 weeks is an additional $900.00 This does not include any travel insurance, vaccinations, proper attire, covering bills for the month & other necessary purchases needed. The total cost of the trip is approximately $5500.00.
I will officially be leaving July 15th!
Last time I was accepted to volunteer in Thailand, I declined due to cost, but I know I can not pass on this opportunity.
I am going to try to raise money with bake sales, and side jobs here and there, but it is very hard with so little time being in school full-time, doing research and working part-time.
Which brings me here. I never thought I would be in a situation where I ask others for this kind of help, but my close friends reminded me that this donation is not just for me, but it is towards an extremely important cause.
There are 3 extant subspecies of Black rhinos, all of which are critically endangered. Illegal poaching for their horns and habitat fragmentation are the biggest threats to all rhino species. This internship will aide with the monitoring and management of existing rhino populations in Malawi.
I am asking for any and all donations possible to help me pursue my dream of working with Black rhinoceros and helping hands on with conservation efforts for these magnificent creatures. Any donation is GREATLY appreciated, as it brings me one step closer to booking my trip. I can not hold my internship spot until I have paid 30% of the fees. (Go Fund Me takes 8% of all the donations received).
I don't expect to be able to raise all of the money on here, but hope to receive just enough to get me at least half way there. I also welcome any comments and suggestions for fundraising project ideas!
Thank you for taking time to read my story and thank you for your support! <3
