On March 15, 2016, the city of Milpitas decided to award their city Municipal Waste contract to be disposed off at the Guadalupe Landfill, in the heart of Almaden Valley, a residential part of San Jose. This decision was an attempt by that city to bypass Republic Services, the owner of the Newby Island Landfill, close to Mipitas.
This decision, based without a full understanding of the adverse impact of sending 400,000 lbs per day of solid waste, 22 miles south, through dense residential areas, has put the burden of additional safety hazards such as
a) pollution,
b) traffic,
c) odor,
d) safety issues [flying debris, nails in tires, diesel fumes]
e) decrease in property values
on the shoulders of Almaden Valley and nearby residents.
We need to fight this. A dedicated team of local residents of Almaden Valley and nearby communities have been raising awareness and tracking this issue for the past 6 months. But we need to do more in order to not have our city, and Waste Management (the owners of Guadalupe Landfill) mistake our silence for agreement.
This campaign will be used by the dedicated people behind this fight, to educate our community, and hopefully overturn this and other garbage disposal contracts to the Guadalupe Landfill.
We don't want and deserve to be on the receiving end of this hypocritical decision by Milpitas! Thank you for your donation, and your continued support in this very important issue.
All campaign funds will be put in a special account, and handled by Joan Santos, on behalf of the Save Almaden organization volunteers.
