Support Saleem’s family to get out of homelessness
Hi, my name is Saleem, I'm 20 years old and I'm homeless with my family and 3 cats, which includes my twin brother Kareem, my older sisters Sarah and Amirah with my mom.
Back in June of 2023, my uncle who we lived with for almost five years, told us that we had 2 weeks to a month to leave, or he would threaten us out with the police. During that time, we had a part time job to save some money while we planned on where we can go to stay for a while.
Since we had no car I got my friend to help us move our stuff into a uhaul and storage . We brought what we could in those days mostly clothes and essentials (pillows, blankets, soaps, cooking pans, books, etc)
On July 25th he kicked us out of the house, and we only had enough savings to use on a motel, bills and food.
Its $90 a night for the motel. Even a few dollars can help a long way. We appreciate anyone who shares and donates to my cause we really need all the help we can get.
Back story for those who want to know more about my situation
In 2019 we moved in with my mom's brother, so in total was 5 of us and my uncle, we had to share a room and the living room, my sisters took the room while my brother and I slept in the living room floor And My mom slept on the couch as well.
Every few days there were arguments between my Mom and Uncle about rent. That caused my Oldest sister to start working part time to help pay the rent which was 3k.
She struggled to pay my uncle monthly, which he started arguing with her and calling us names cause we couldn't work ( My brother and I were barely 15 in 2019)
In 2020 My sister started working full time at that job (with Covid around) made it harder to pay bills, thankfully my dad was able to help abit.
2021 came around and things kept getting worse with my uncle and mom always fighting about the littlest things. Thanks to my sister we made the payments on time.
During May of 2022 the rest of my siblings and I started working part time to help my older sister pay bills, the rent and to buy groceries every week.
We were doing well for a while until June of 2023 when my uncle decided to move out . My mom tried everything so we could have time to move out. He only gave us 2 weeks to a month or he would get the police involved. We were scared he would do something to us and panicked to quickly make some plans to transfer jobs to another city and to rent an apartment as well.
July 25th came around we packed our things in a uhaul and my friend was able to drive us to a motel since we don't have a car of our own.
We dropped our stuff at a storage and we pay monthly for it to stay there.
Sadly we couldn't move forward with the apartment, because when we tried to transfer jobs they didnt hire us on time and we had to leave our old jobs.
We've been to multiple motels every week since then, with my older sister and dad helping us continue to stay at the motel for a while.
In August and September we looked for jobs and places to rent, went to a few houses to visit and a few job interviews. We haven't got hired yet. We applied everywhere
During October we were so close to get a position at a nearby store, they declined our application because we don't have a place to live even though we are in a motel for now.
In November and December more friends and some family helped out with the motel and groceries we are very thankful for you all.
January 2024 and February we looked at more houses to rent and jobs as well. Its almost $2,200 for rent here, the landlord needs 2 to 3x the rent and deposit is $2,300
It's been 6 months of us being homeless I want to move in to a home with my family and cats. They mean so much to me I can't do this alone, I need all the help we can get
