Remove Confederate Statue in Brunswick Georgia

It is long past time that symbols glorifying white supremacy were eradicated from Ahmaud Arbery's hometown of Brunswick Georgia. A 20-foot tall confederate statue looms over Brunswick's historic Hanover Square in the heart of this city. The city commission voted on Wed, Nov. 18th to remove the statue and the Robert S. Abbott Race Unity Institute pledged to help fundraise towards that effort.
We need to raise money for legal costs and removal costs because not long ago, Georgia, along with many other states, passed laws making it illegal to remove a confederate memorial from a public space to one less visible. Brunswick's Mayor and City Commissioners voted to remove the statue but to wait until pending cases in other parts of the state are resolved so that they can determine the most effective legal strategy to get around this law. In the meantime, Mayor Harvey is working to raise money for a "walking museum" celebrating Black history in the area to better represent Brunswick's values. Any funds raised through this gofundme that do not go to legal and removal costs will go towards public installations honoring the rich Black history of this area.
