“Education is not the learning of the facts. It is training the mind to think” (Albert Einstein). Students in America today are given the tools to think in a variety of ways; computers, iPads, iPhones, books, recorded books, kinesthetic activities, visuals, real-world experiences, etc. Then, we have students in other countries that don’t have access to that type of learning support system to help enhance their way of thinking. My name is Brittany Red Fox, I am a 6th grade math teacher in Keller ISD, and I would love to volunteer at an orphanage in Pokhara, Nepal. For the longest time, I have wanted to experience a culture completely different than my own, and at the same time be able to give back to those who are less fortunate.
I graduated from the University of North Texas in 2011, and ever since then, I have not been able to fight the urge to go overseas to better the education and lives of children that are not exposed to the technology and educational resources that our students are accustomed to here in the states . Therefore, I found an amazing volunteer program called Global Vision International (GVI) that will allow me to be a part of their international volunteer team in Nepal where I will help young children at an orphanage and a primary school for three weeks this summer.
There I will be helping children develop the English language, plan with other teachers, lead in physical education activities, assisting students with their homework, teaching lesson at the primary school, and playing games with the kids at the orphanage in Nepal.
Unfortunately, to be able to do this comes at a cost. The program alone costs $1,900. That amount goes towards resources for the school, food for the children, sources and devices to help teach the lessons, project development, and much more. The rest would go towards my flight to Nepal. I plan on covering my expenses for while I am there as well as my visa and travel insurance. I am asking for your help by helping me raise $4000. This would be an experience of a lifetime. I would be able to further my background as English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher by helping English Language Learners (ELLs) learn the English language. I would be able to give back to a community that is in need of educational support for their students, utilize my degree in a unique way by working with children that come from a completely diverse culture than my own, and finally, I would love to come back and share my experience with my colleagues at Keller ISD.
Anything you can contribute to help make the lives of these children in Nepal change for the better would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time and consideration to this fund.
