In mid October, I'm on my way. I am traveling to far western Nepal to the town of Dadeldhura.
I am volunteering to work with a group from the faith based organization "Dare to Care". They have had a presence in the region there for decades. They have constructed dozens of structures, including shelters and a social center, thus making life better for many, including orphans, lepers, paraplegics and women widowed by the civil war (1996-2006) and natural disasters, such as the devastating earthquake of April 2015.
I will be using the skills taught to me by my father, including basic wiring and plumbing, tiling and painting. This is a total volunteer mission. I am, with your help, financing my own way, and any and all expenses incurred while in Nepal. I will receive no compensation, other than a roof over my head and a few basic meals a day. I will be there until mid December. I will have access to occasional internet and will keep donors updated with emails, and photos and videos as much as possible. I have made a Facebook page called “On the Road; Mission to Nepal” and I will try to use that as a type of blog.
Obviously while I am gone, my income will be minimal. The funds I am asking for will be used for both my travel and living expenses while abroad. Anything I collect that exceeds what I need for this trip and my obligations at home in my absense, I will donate to “Dare to Care”.
I want to thank my family and friends that have been so supportive, even those I have seen with their fingers crossed behind their backs while expressing that support! There is an element of danger to this trip, including disease, poisonous critters of the reptile variety, terrible roads and shaky airplane flights, but I have made my commitment to do this.
I know there are humans all over this planet that can use help, but I have chosen these people, and I appreciate anything you can do, to help me help them. Namaste!
