HELP US OPEN OUR MOWANA SAFE SPACE TO SAVE LIVES

MOWANA Safe Space Incorporated

23 September 2022

Hi Everyone,

We need your help to Save lives on the Northern Beaches!!

My name is Melani Kypri. I am Vice president of MOWANA Safe Space Inc. We are very close to opening our Safe Space on the Northern Beaches to help save lives.

We are meeting with Council today to discuss a suitable space in Mona Vale that we may be able to use until we find our forever space. We are crossing our fingers and toes!! This is so exciting as we can start to support some of the vulnerable people in our community. So watch this SPACE!!

Sadly, suicide in our community is on the rise, and it is essential to note that each death represents the life of a person lost to suicide which has a family and community grieving for their loss. What we do know is that we must intervene earlier to save lives. What are we doing to help our community? We have incorporated our Mowana Safe Space; we have our ABN and Tax File No. We are about to open our own Bank account. We have applied for our Charity and DGR Status. We have a wonderful committee full of much experience and knowledge of Suicide prevention.

We have had an amazing 70 people in our community apply to be Peer Support volunteer workers in our Safe Space, but we always need more.  We have received ASIST Suicide prevention training from Our local Primary Health Network. So far, 40 of our volunteers have trained in ASIST, with more going through in October. However, our volunteers also need Peer Care Companion Training. This will cost us $300 per person, To date, nine of our volunteers have had the opportunity to do this training, but we need to raise more funds to cover this fundamental course.
We now need $9,000 to cover the training costs for another 30 volunteers.

If everyone in our community contributed at least $5 to our Gofundme page, we would have a Community owned, Community run Safe Space for EVERYONE in our Community. We never know when someone in our family or friend group may need a friendly face, a cuppa and someone to listen to them and give them support to find the right services in our area.

MOWANA meaning:
In Africa, Mowana is the Tswana name for the Baobab tree.
For many African communities, it is a place where people gather for shelter, protection and to meet – a landmark symbolic of stability. The Baobab Tree is also known as the “Tree of Life.” This tree behaves like a giant succulent, with up to 80 percent of its trunk made up of water. San bushmen used to rely on the trees as a valuable source of water when the rains failed and the rivers dried. The Mowana is a life-giver for wildlife and often creates its own ecosystem. It provides food and shelter for a myriad of species, from the tiniest insect to the mighty African elephant.
I feel like MOWANA describes our Safe space to a tee. FOOD FOR THOUGHT!
It is, of course, also: MO - Mona Vale; WA – Warriewood; NA – Narrabeen - the area of the Northern Beaches with very little or no services available to help people in our community suffering from Emotional distress.

Please help us to help our Community! If you have any queries, please call or text me on 0414 295 110. Please also join our Facebook group to keep up to date with what we are doing.

Kind Regards

Hi Everyone,

The NSW Suicide Monitoring System as just sent through the latest figures for 2020 and 2021.

In 2020 there were 904 suspected suicides in NSW.

In 2021 there were 928 suspected suicides in NSW.

So, they have increased by 24 suicides in 2021. 16 Females and 8 males. The biggest increase has been in the 35-44 age and 75-84 age groups.

It is important to note that each death represents the life of a person lost to suicide who has a family and community grieving for their loss. What we do know is that we must intervene earlier to save lives, and this is where you come in.

WE NEED OUR COMMUNITY LED SAFE SPACE TO BE UP AND RUNNING ASAP.

More statistics:

The rate of intentional self-harm hospitalisations in females aged 14 and below more than doubled from 19 per 100,000 population in 2008-09 to 41 per 100,000 in 2019-20.

The rate of intentional self-harm hospitalisations in females aged between 15-19 was 552 per 100,000 in 2019-20, followed by females aged between 20-24 was 340 per 100,000.

Ambulance attendances for suicidal ideation increased from 17.3 per 100,000 population in March 2018 to 27 in March 2021.

I don't think that the way we are currently dealing with Mental Health is working that well, DO YOU??

We need a community led approach to creating a safe place in this area that all children and adults would be aware of and feel comfortable to attend when in crisis. We would like something our Community can be proud to be a part of. We have explored different models of Safe Havens in Australia and the UK that are working well. These are a calm, non-clinical space where any person in crisis can come to. There will always be a caring peer support person with valuable lived experience and suitable training to listen and guide them to services that we know are readily available. They will be given referrals to services applicable and follow up. Ideally the space needs to be easily accessible and close to public transport.

My hopes are for us to have a 24-hour, 7 day per week safe space within a Community Hub. The more funds we can raise the longer hours we can have our Safe Space open each week.

Northern Beaches C.A.R.E.S. has been given the opportunity to be part of Roses in the Ocean pilot program for a Safe Space on the Northern Beaches. We have been Co-designing our Safe Spaces for the past 2 months. As soon as we find a suitable space we will start advertising for Volunteers and start the training process. We need $150,000 approximately to get this off the ground, including Volunteer training, wages, rent and running costs for the first year

If many of you can contribute as little as $5 to this Go Fund Me page we will be on the right track to saving lives. If you can support this necessary project with even more money we could be closer to our 24/7 Safe Space goal.

If you wish to discuss any aspect of this, or you would like to become one of our volunteers please contact me asap on 0414295110 or [email redacted].au.

I thankyou in advance for your help in making this very important community-based initiative come to life.

$5 (or more) To save a Life.
