Motivate & Empower The RESA Amputee Community in Barbados:

Donation protected
Dear Supporters,

I am writing to you with a heart full of compassion for a mission that has become the pinnacle of my life's work. This will be my 2nd Mission trip to Barbados to help inspire, motivate & empower the Amputee Community.

I am excited to be working together with the National Disabilities Unit in Barbados to initiate the RESA Empowerment Initiative' . The Initiative consists of 2 custom workshops that I designed from listening to the wants & needs of the amputee community during my last Mission trip. I then combined my 46 years experience of living as an amputee to create solutions in the form of these 2 Workshops. One addresses the not-so-talked-about 'Mental' side of living life as an amputee, called the Mentorship Workshop. The other workshop called 'Working with Pallet Wood' teaches how to craft 3 selected items from recycled pallet wood to be sold in the Tourism Industry. The workshop is designed to facilitate the amputee communities financial growth as a whole. I will talk more about these 2 transformative Workshops a little further down the page.

Also, as part of the RESA Empowerment Initiative, I will again be working with the National Disabilities Unit helping 2 in the amputee community with some interior renovations to their homes for better quality of life. There will also be taking part in events and celebrations by different organisations, charities & foundations like I did during my last Mission trip. The island of Barbados honors the entire month of April as 'Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month'. I am so grateful to be playing a part in this once again as I work together with Patrick Forde, the new president of RESA & his board. So many lives are going to be changed and I invite you to join this Mission as we take that next big step to making a life-changing impact on the amputee community in Barbados.

I will be in Barbados for 6 weeks to carry out the agenda from March 19th till the 1st of May 2025. The estimated cost of the Mission trip is $4,600. Your donations of any size are greatly appreciated in helping make this happen.

My Devotion & Compassion

For the past year, I have been devoted to developing new ways to empower the amputee community in Barbados, a journey that has been both challenging & incredibly rewarding.

I have also been mentoring 3 different amputees… Alvin, Patrick & Kerry. These amazing gentlemen all have their own unique stories that touched my heart with compassion, love & understanding. I will talk more about those 3 amazing gentlemen further down the page.

My Physical & Emotional Struggle

As an amputee myself for the last 46 years, I understand the physical and emotional struggles that come with limb loss. I lost my left foot, part of my leg & part of my right foot in a horrific lawnmower accident when I was 9 years old. Recovering from that was a whirlwind of uncertainty & new beginnings. I was forced to adapt & discover new ways to cope and adjust my life.

I knew way back then that God had a special purpose for me and my life. So many other people said that to me as well. So here I am today helping the people that God has called me to help in Barbados. Your support is so very important to help make this happen. ✨

During My Last Mission Trip

During my last Mission Trip to Barbados in March of 2024, I had the pleasure of meeting many of the local organisations that assist the amputees and the people with disabilities on the island. Suzanne Watts, the founder of ‘Stride Prosthetics’ and Rosanna Tudor, Operations Manager at the 'Barbados Council for the Disabled' played a key role to pave the way for me to connect with the community in a special way. The members of the 'RESA' (Rehabilitating, Enabling, Society for Amputees) community welcomed me with open arms. We developed a special connection and they are my family now.
They made me their new voice & RESA Community Ambassador. I accepted that with honor, said a prayer to thank God & have been dedicated to developing new ways to empower them ever since.

From public speaking at events (one that made the 7pm local TV news & an article in the paper) to attending church services to fellowship with the locals, to appearing on the local TV show, ‘Mornin Barbados’ to share my story & Missions intent. This definitely got the momentum going on my last trip and I look to do it all again on this next Mission trip.

I am so grateful to get this far and I feel that God has been preparing me my whole life to carry out his special plan to empower the amputee community in Barbados. This whole Mission is a testament to the power of God, his timing, love & compassion. I have been following each of the steps he has shown me with a new sense of faith, understanding & respect of the great Mission he has put me on.
Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

The RESA (Rehabilitating, Enabling, Society for Amputees) Board

Patrick, shown in the middle of the picture is now the new President of RESA. God has seen to it that we will be working together on our shared vision to empower RESA.

Tonia Holder Springer, on the right is the Acting Public Relations Officer. She has been a key player in keeping me informed & connected with Patrick as I developed this next Mission trips agenda.

Antoinette Chandler on the left works as the Secretary/Treasurer. She was one of the first board members that I met in a meeting we scheduled in the beginning of my last Mission trip. Antoinette was the first in explaining to me how the RESA community works, it's problems & how they are addressing them.
I look forward to seeing them all in person again soon, as we work together to transform the amputee community.

Listed below are the Amputee’s that I am Mentoring & helping this trip as part of the (RESA Empowerment Initiative)

Patrick Forde

During my last Mission trip, I became close friends with a young man in the RESA community named Patrick Forde. He is living without both of his legs, confined in a wheelchair because he can't afford the high cost of the 2 new prosthetic legs. He inspired me with his energy & heart of compassion as he strives to help others and we became good friends. Patrick is Married to his wonderful wife Victoria and they have a little baby boy named Nathan.

God showed me that I should focus on Patrick. He is shown in the right side of the picture. Patrick is in need of two new prosthetic knees, so we can build him 2 new prosthetic legs. With the help of organisations in the USA like PENTA MED Prosthetics & the Limbs for Life Foundation, we have acquired the 2 prosthetic KNEE components to make that happen. Amen!

Stride Prosthetics, located in Barbados, will have the task of using those prosthetic components to build the 2 legs Patrick needs. This Next Mission trip is so important to accomplish that!
-- Patrick also needs a 20ft Storage Container to store his supplies & material's for his Upholstery business.
-- Your donations will help get a storage bin for Patrick.

Alvin Headley

I first met Alvin & his wife June at a church service Sue & I attended.
Alvin has faced significant challenges due to his long fight with diabetes. He lost his leg in his fight & is now on weekly dialysis treatments. He is unable to work and relies on his wife to cover most of their bills. Living paycheck to paycheck, they often struggle to make ends meet and sometimes go without food. Despite receiving a small portion of financial help from the government, Alvin's medical expenses exceed the payout, leaving them in a precarious financial situation. This is unacceptable. Here is the solution.

Alvin and his wife own a two-story home but are confined to the bottom floor due to the need for renovations upstairs. Completing these renovations would allow them to move to the cooler upper floor and rent out the downstairs to traveling nurses from the nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital. This additional income would significantly improve their quality of life. It is my goal to see this through on my next Mission trip.
I am now working with the National Disabilities Unit in Barbados to get this done. They are a pivotal organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. I am looking to meet with them in person & get this done for Alvin during this next Mission trip. Yes, I believe God has a special plan for us all.

Kerry Hunte

When I first met Kerry, he had recently undergone an amputation due to his battle with diabetes. He was struggling hard with the mental and emotional toll of his new reality of living the rest of his life as an amputee.

I was attending the RESAMeet & Greet’ event where I did a speaking presentation. Kerry’s mother approached me in the parking lot, her eyes filled with hope and concern. She said, "I heard you were going to be here, and I wanted my son to talk with you. I have tried talking with him but he is so sad from losing his leg. I pray there is some way that you can pull him out of that and give him some hope & inspiration.
When I started talking with Kerry, I could see he was in deep distress, over the loss of his leg. It brought me back to that same emotional state when I first lost my leg. What a powerful moment. He kept repeating, "What am I going to do? I want my old life back." Listening to his story and witnessing his pain hit me pretty hard. This was the real deal. At that moment, I knew that something had to be done to support individuals like Kerry who were suffering in silence with no real understanding of what it’s like to live a wonderful, rewarding life as an amputee. This was the in-your-face moment that prompted me to develop the 'Mentorship Workshop'. I have thanked Kerry for his expression of true feelings and the way he inspired & empowered me to develop this workshop tool that will help so many others. Much more to come with this story!

Listed below are the 2 Workshops I developed as part of the (RESA Empowerment Initiative).

'Personal Mentorship Workshop

This workshop was inspired during my last Mission trip in 2024 by my mentoring talks with an amputee friend named Kerry Hunte. This whole new journey living as an amputee can be terrifying. Without a grasp on the fundamentals of what to expect from someone who has lived it, you are left to navigate the new life on your own. It can lead down a dark path into negative thoughts, deep depression, loss of self-worth and giving up on family & friends to suffer in silence. This is why I developed the ‘Mentorship Workshop’.

This workshop focuses on addressing the Mental Health and Emotional well-being of amputees. I had to open old wounds from my past that I had already pushed through & overcame in order to develop this workshop. It was the only way to get into that sacred ‘Space’ to Mentally Connect with participants' emotional state. This was a tough process that had to be done in order to gather the ingredients I felt were needed to make this workshop a success on a personal level.

Through one-on-one mentorship sessions and group activities, participants will learn life-changing, ‘Mental’ techniques that have worked for me & given me the power to overcome everyday obstacles with a new sense of motivation, empowerment & peace. This workshop also teaches participants a physical technique that lessens the effects of Phantom Pain attacks. This workshop is the first of its kind & designed to provide positive infusion to individuals in a more personal, compassionate way.
I am excited to launch this workshop in collaboration with the National Disabilities Unit in Barbados. So many lives are going to be changed.

Working with Pallet Wood’ workshop

This 2nd workshop that I developed was inspired by my 16 years of crafting custom furniture pieces from reclaimed pallets & barn wood. It has never been done like this, to empower the amputee community in a financial setting. I will be working in collaboration with the National Disabilities Unit & a few other organisations in Barbados to set this transformative workshop up.

The Working with Pallet Wood workshop, is an innovative hands-on, ECO friendly, GREEN initiative workshop that will be able to get grants and GREEN funding behind it as well. I see this unique workshop with the potential of generating a lot of money when marketed correctly in the tourism industry, to promote growth & meet the needs of future the amputee community.

Here Is How It Works --
The ‘Working With Pallet Wood’ workshop teaches selected participants from the RESA community how to create custom Gift boxes from recycled pallet wood. It will be set up like assembly line work.
-- On completion, each Gift box will be filled with assorted items that are only found in Barbados like – dry spices, holistic lotions & creams, sensual oils, candles and unisex jewelry.
-- Each Gift box will then be packaged in clear plastic & with the 'tag string' tied near the top.

How The Gift Boxes Will Be Marketed --
These Gift boxes will be tagged with an information tag telling about the RESA (Rehabilitating, Enabling, Society for Amputees) community, its future goals and thanking each customer. The tag will also show that most of the proceeds are going back into helping support the RESA communities initiatives. -- This is the power of this workshop.
These Gift boxes will have a story and a special purpose behind them. They will be marketed & sold in the tourism industry, generating the much needed revenue to support the amputee community's needs. This workshop will not only promote environmental sustainability by recycling & repurposing the shipping pallets into marketable products but also empowers the amputee community with a greater purpose, valuable skills, money making capabilities and a new sense of empowerment.

My Vision For The Future of RESA

After a few years of the Working With Pallet Wood workshops success is under our belt at making money for the RESA community, I see Step 2 of the vision.
I would like to see the RESA community benefit by purchasing a property. It will be renovated and turned into a Handicap-Friendly Rental compound. It would then be made available to handicapped families & small groups from around the world giving them a cost friendly 'safe space' to enjoy Barbados. The renters would have all the amenities like Lift-Van transportation and special beach accomodations at their fingertips through the 'Barbados Council For the Disabled.

The property could also be used for events & meetings. The proceeds of this rental will go to help support the RESA communities continued growth & future initiatives.
-- This is just a concept idea and picture representation of what could be.

I am always thinking outside the box. That is the way to the vision moving forward. It is time to reach for results, to achieve the unthinkable and to Empower those in our Vision, the RESA Amputee Community, in Barbados. ✨
