Mending Tula: Help us Support our Girl

Our daughter Tula is in hospital recovering from surgery on her spine to correct her scoliosis. For four long weeks leading up to the operation, she went through halo traction to pull her crooked spine into a better shape. This involved her having a device screwed into her skull under general anaesthetic to which increasingly heavy weights were attached, which pulled on her head day and night. The 9-hr operation was a success, and the rods that have been put into her back will grow as she does, which should mean no more invasive surgery will be required in future. However, her care has been far from ideal. She has suffered tremendously throughout her long stay at hospital, which is understaffed and clearly underfunded. Staff at the teaching hospital in Caen have consistently ignored and brutalised my girl, from the untreated infections in her head which I tried to bring to doctors' attention, to her being held down by nurses while she screamed in pain during periodic tightenings of her halo, which were conducted without any consideration of her emotional or mental wellbeing. As I write this, my husband has taken time away from his work to replace me by her side, to care for her and advocate for her. At this time of year, we desperately need to be earning in order to get through Christmas and to be able to celebrate our brave girl's return home. With three other girls at home, our finances are extremely stretched. Tula is 8 years old, and very young to be undergoing this treatment. And yet none of the staff have treated her with the respect and compassion she deserves. Having spent 5 intensive weeks by her side, caring for her 24 hrs a day, I am physically exhausted and traumatised by witnessing her daily suffering. Nurses were indifferent to the point of cruelty, and there were times when all I could do was cry, wishing I could spirit her out of there and take her home. I never thought my parting words to my husband would be to ask him to protect her from hospital staff. This campaign was started back in February, when Tula's operation was first arranged, pre-pandemic. We wanted to buy a family car, after being ripped off by a secondhand purchase which we were forced to scrap. Now we just need help to get through these last weeks until Tula comes home. Please help us if you can: with neither of us able to work whilst we care for Tula as well as our other girls, we are facing a dismal Christmas on top of all of the other issues we are juggling. Any contribution you can make will help us get through this. Thank you for reading our story.
