Help Us Save Mothers & Babies in Ghana

Ghana is often celebrated as one of Africa’s safest countries, known for its rich culture, incredible food, and thriving nightlife. But beyond the beauty and warmth lies a healthcare crisis that many don’t see—one that puts thousands of mothers and babies at risk every year.

As a British-Ghanaian midwife, I, Hayley, was fortunate to train and work in the UK, where safe maternity care is a right, not a privilege. But returning to Ghana changed everything.

I saw women having to leave their newborns in the hospital, visiting them daily because they couldn’t afford to pay the accumulated fees to take their babies home. I saw pregnant women paying for blood tests— tests for iron levels and infections that are crucial to maintaining a healthy pregnancy. If they didn’t have the money for their samples to be sent to the lab, they had to physically take them there themselves—something women in the UK don’t even have to think about.

I saw women bringing their own essentials for delivery—incopads, maternity pads, cot sheets, antiseptic wipes and other basic items that the NHS provides for free.

Yes, it made me ashamed of how much I take for granted—but it also lit a fire in me to do something. So I shared my interest with my fellow colleagues and...

That’s why, in January 2026, WE, a group of UK midwives are going to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to:
✅ Share our skills & learn from Ghanaian midwives
✅ Support mothers who can’t afford maternity care
✅ Provide essential equipment to improve safety for women & babies

The Reality in Ghana

1 in every 170 women will die from pregnancy-related causes (compared to 1 in 12,200 in the UK).

20 newborns die every day from preventable complications.
⚕️ Many hospitals lack basic tools like fetal monitors and neonatal resuscitation equipment.

Giving birth in a hospital can cost GHS 3,000 (£200) or MORE! —a price many families simply cannot afford and that's not including antenatal or postnatal care.

The average salary for informal workers like market traders is from around GHS 1,000 (£51) to 2,500 (£130), meaning childbirth alone can cost more than a family’s entire monthly income.

Ghana is full of life, but the reality for pregnant women is far from safe.

How You Can Help

We are fundraising £5,000 to:
Cover maternity costs for women in need
Donate life-saving equipment to the maternity ward
Support women with essentials for pregnancy and motherhood

Even £10 could make a difference. Every pound you donate brings us closer to a world where no woman has to risk her life to give birth.
