We're raising funds to help Jamie get back on her feet after struggling to recover from a brutal rape and assault 4 years ago.
While she awaited the trial, Jamie bravely faced 3 years living alone. She travelled alone on public transit working late nights shifts, knowing the man who raped her knew where she worked and lived.
The effects on Jamie's mental health were extreme. She fought anxiety attacks at work, on public transit and at home alone. Alcohol became her way to soothe and numb herself. She would end up in the hospital emergency several times with alcohol overdose.
She found herself unable to function in her job environment and began struggling to pay rent. She gave up her art, singing, acting and film projects. She just tried to survive and not turn to self harm.
Jamie finally had the chance to face the rapist in court. She was the only one out of several young women who were assaulted by this man, that committed to laying charges and testifying in court. She bravely went through the trial alone.
It was another year of waiting for the sentencing while he walked free. Jamie lived in chaos & fear. She lost her herself in anxiety and financial struggles trying to pay rent and remain slightly functional.
He was convicted and got min punishment. She reached for counselling last year and is trying to lift herself up.
Jamie is currently living on Hastings, the worst most dangerous area of Vancouver, in a low cost housing apartment. She has to leave her room at night and go down a hallway to a shared bathroom. Her neighbors are men she does not know. Even receiving funding from a government program helping people to stay off the street, this is what she can afford.
She doesn't understand her strength and bravery. Even with all her trauma, Jamie is still the kindest, brightest, warmest, accepting and giving soul you might ever meet.
She wants to help other women. She is looking at options. Finding volunteer opportunities to facilitate and be a source of strength for other women in crisis.
She will change & save lives one day. I know this because I am her mom and I know what she's made of.
But, she needs a few things she can't manage by herself right now.
She needs to feel supported.
She needs to be reminded she is valuable.
She needs a break.
She needs a chance to get out of low cost, dangerous housing.
She needs to be reminded she is worthy.
She is safe.
She is valued.
She deserves a good life.
