Kathy Carroll Community Playground
Kathy Carroll was an internationally known substance use research psychologist, publishing over 350 articles, designing methods to demonstrate to others how to apply scientific methods to the study of psychotherapy, and creating innovative treatments for those with substance use problems.
More than that- Kathy was an amazingly generous woman- with her time, her compassion, her knowledge, and her assets. Kathy knew how to lift others up- whether it was family, mentees, friends, or children facing homelessness in New Haven.
In the week before Kathy fell critically ill, she reached out to Christian Community Action (CCA) caseworker Hannah Croasmun to make sure the families at CCA were cared for- and then donated money from her ICU hospital bed.
Kathy was fierce and passionate- and working her antiracist values by boldly addressing substance use treatment disparities in our geographic area- as well as across the country.
In her short life, Kathy's brilliance, funky fashion sense, playful spirit, and generosity left her mark on so many. Kathy's family and friends are now paying it forward by creating a safe, permanent, and fun outdoor playground for the children at CCA and New Haven's Newhallville neighborhood.
CCA is renovating a transitional supportive housing program located on the site of an old school building. The current parking lot has a perfect space for a playground- but CCA could not have afforded to build one. Let's do this for Kathy Carroll.
