J, D, P, P & T’s Coast to Coast Challenge

OUR STORY

Joey, Duncan, Phil, Penny and Tracey here, we are made up of 2 on-call firefighters (Joey & Phil) and 2 Sailors in the Royal Navy (Duncan & Penny). We will also be joined by Tracey who is Penny’s wife. On the 24th May this year we will embark on a 190 mile trek from St.Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay in Yorkshire. We will be following Wainwright's route a hike that normally takes 12 days to complete. However, we are going to try and complete the route in a total of 5 days at an average of 38 miles per day. We realise this is a challenge in itself, but we have decided to make things a little bit tougher and attempt the challenge in full fire kit carrying a breathing apparatus set weighing a total of 30kg.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITIES

The Firefighters Charity This Charity provides services that enhance quality of life for serving and retired firefighters, fire personnel and their families through a range of support programmes including physical rehabilitation, psychological support, recuperation and a confidential helpline which provides impartial advice, guidance and support on a wide range of concerns. They know that everybody is different, that no two injuries are the same and that no two people are affected in the same way by incidents they experience. The personalised support can involve one or more possible pathways, delivered in a number of different ways- over the phone, online using digital technology, out in your local community or at one of their centres; Harcombe House in Devon, Jubilee House in the Lake District or Marine Court in West Sussex. Their aim, is always the same, to help them move forward positively in life.

The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity This Charity provides support to Sailors, Marines and their families, for life. £25 could provide a much needed hot meal, overnight shelter and a medical check-up for a homeless veteran. £50 could provide a session of counselling when deployment has taken its toll on relationships and families. £100 could provide life enhancing speech, recreational and physiotherapy to a physically disabled veteran for a week. £400 could assist with a veteran's funeral costs. £1000 could fund a Family Day for ship's company about to deploy to support their families left at home. £10,000 could enable them to refurbish, replace and enhance communal and onshore facilities, both social and sporting.

We are very aware that 2020 was a difficult year for all Charities and Organisations, and 2021 hasn't started off much better. We are setting ourselves this challenge in hope we can make a little bit of difference for our charities.
The Firefighters Charity has been chosen by us as we believe they offer immense support to firefighters and their families nationally, and know first hand the importance such a service has to the dedicated firefighters who have provided a vital service to the UK throughout their career. The service is well equipped to provide firefighters and their families with emotional and practical help when they need it most. It is imperative that funding for this charity is continued as without it they would not be able to access the services that they so greatly need and could ultimately have a detrimental affect on their emotional well being and need for practical assistance.
Very similar to The Firefighters charity, we have chose The Royal Navy & The Royal Marines Charity as we believe they offer life saving support to all past and present personnel and their families. They've helped 876 medically discharged veterans back into work, funding has helped 87 London taxis drive 97 D-Day veterans back to the beaches of Normandy, 170 Christmas Stockings delivered to a submarine for Christmas Day and 804 children had bedtime stories to listen to while a parent was away on deployment .
