Jackson Davis' Eagle Project

My name is Jackson Davis, a life scout in troop 77 in New Port Richey, Florida.  For my Eagle Project, I have decided to help Messengers of Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps feed those in need in our area. Messengers of hope is different from other food pantry's in that they drive out to set locations in our area, serving those in need there. This eliminates the need for these people, some of whom cannot afford cars, to drive many miles to get the basic necessity of food. Messengers of hope delivers to 2 locations every Sunday, serving hundreds of people. Currently, messengers of hope loads food and tables from their warehouse into volunteer’s cars and their trailer. However, if there aren’t enough volunteers that day, MoH cannot deliver the needed amount of food.  In addition, at every location the volunteers have to unload all of the tables, food items, and tents.  After serving, they then must take down everything and reload it into the trailer and cars.  This takes hours of time that could be better used at additional stops, feeding additional people.  My eagle project aims to fix this by converting a school bus into a mobile food pantry. Food items will be loaded onto racks lining the inside walls of the bus. Those who need food will then walk down the bus aisle with the volunteers retrieving food off the shelves. By doing this project, Messengers of Hope can add more stops to their schedule and provide enough food for those in need.

            The Project includes acquiring a used school bus, painting it, removing the seats, building a storage system inside, acquiring a generator and refrigerator/freezer.  And, if funds allow, purchasing and stocking it with food for its initial delivery.   We will be holding a food drive as well.
